Appears Sheriff Candidate Mike Taylor's Campaign Violated Law...

I know all readers had to see the Mike Taylor for Sheriff campaign signs throughout Clay County yesterday.  They were placed at all, or most, polling locations throughout Clay County on the Public Right-of-way.  This is in violation of Clay County's sign ordinance.

One would think that someone running for Sheriff would at-least be familiar with, and abide by, the laws of Clay County.  Notice you did not see any other Sheriff candidates' signs out; they must know and respect the laws of Clay County.

Flooding?

Do you guys have any flooding stories from last night/this morning? Where are the worst areas in Clay?

A lady here at the TU (who lives in the Julington-Creek area) was caught in a flash-flood last night and had to be evacuated out of her car. I heard a forecaster call this flooding a "50-year event". Does anybody remember worse flooding?

Property Taxes

I am anxiously awaiting to see just how much the County Property Appraiser sticks it to me this year with the taxable value on a non homesteaded property I own.  For anyone out there reading this who has a second home in Clay County you may want to pay attention to yours as well.

The second home I own is in Orange Park South, last year the taxable value on that house was raised nearly 23% in just one year.  I was told by the County Appraisers Office that the increase was based upon sales in the subdivision.

When I investigated all the rental homes in OPS that were handled through a Realtor I discovered that the tax increases went from 4-49% in this neighborhood.

Golfing Blues

New Day; New Blog

Focus: My understanding of the silly, maddening, fascinating, infuriating events with direct and indirect impact on my community. Also, my interests which may or may not amuse anyone else. So be it.

Today: Golfing Blues

Clay County has quite a few courses. Rumor says that they are all barely breaking even from a business standpoint (except probably the one on NAS Jacksonville. Lotta choices for us. I live on a golf course. A defunct golf course. Been defunct for over a year with no end in sight. Don't know if there is anyone out there with enough $$ and tolerance for suffering that would want to buy it. Probably the most beautiful area for golf in NE FL but...it is all overgrown with mustard weeds with a level of disrepair that has taken multiple owners years to achieve. But I have an IDEA:

A new playing field for Clay County sports

Clay County’s annual playoff roller coaster ride has finally come to a stop, and what a rush it has been.

Ya’ll will have to excuse me if I appear a bit wobbly coming off the cart, but I get a front-row seat to Clay’s February Frenzy (move over March madness), and, truth be told, coasters and I have been known to undigest hot dogs at a projectile pace.

Newcomers guide to Clay

'Afternoon everybody. Even though I've only been a Floridian for about two weeks now, I have created a travel guide for Clay County and I'm happy enough with what I have found to share it with you. Sit back, take an early break from work (it's Friday, after all), and see if you can follow along.

We'll start with fine dining. As a young man with a taste for the finer things in life and with the overflowing wallet of a journalist, I was quick to discover the finer eateries in Clay. This first spot straddles the intersection of 17 and Old Orange Park Rd, next to the Kennel Club. You may know it as Krystal Burger, I know it as Heaven. They offer burgers in any size and shape you want, as long as you want them small and square. The rest of their stuff is pretty good too, but nothing like their burgers. Price of the food? Let's put it this way; there was a car in the drive-thru the other night sans a driver's door.
