A Gainesville Police lieutenant, struck by a drunk driver, was “clinging to life” early Wednesday, the Florida Highway Patrol reported.

On Tuesday morning, Lt. Corey Dahlem, 45, had been crossing W. University Avenue, which was closed to motorists so fans could celebrate the University of Florida national basketball championship victory. A pickup turned onto the roadway and hit Dahlem.

Dahlem, an officer with the Gainesville Police Department for more than 20 years, underwent surgeries at Shands at the University of Florida after the crash, said Lt. Keith Kameg.

Dahlem's prognosis was described Wednesday as bleak, although the hospital's official condition report lists him as critical, the Florida Highway Patrol reported.

Troopers, who are investigating the crash, arrested the pickup's driver, Austin J. Wright, 21, of Atlantic Beach. Wright was charged with driving under the influence with serious bodily injury to another and failure to stop or remain at an accident involving injury.

A $500,000 bond was set for Wright during a court hearing at the Gainesville criminal courthouse Wednesday morning, said Florida Highway Patrol Lt. Mike Burroughs and Kameg.
