County Officials Conduct Cruel 'Experiment' on Homeless Shelter Dog

When PETA received complaints accusing Clay County, Florida, officials of intentionally placing a dog from the county animal shelter in a closed vehicle and leaving the animal there for an entire hour in mid-afternoon heat, we almost couldn't believe it. But internal county documents and news reports confirm that county officials did indeed conduct this outrageously cruel "experiment" on a dog in their custody to "recreate" the conditions believed to be responsible for the September 10 death of another dog in their care, a Rottweiler named Diamond. Diamond died of apparent heat-related shock after Clay County Animal Control (CCAC) Officer Billy Wilson left her in an animal control vehicle—without air-conditioning or even access to water or fresh air—on an 85ºF day.

Everyone knows that even just a few minutes in a car on a summer day can be harmful and deadly. Leaving animals in closed vehicles is explicitly addressed in the criminal codes protecting animals in several states. However, Wilson's improper conduct pales in comparison to Clay County's public officials' willful decision to cause intentional torment to a dog in an utterly unnecessary and crude experiment.

PETA is calling on the state attorney's office to launch a criminal investigation into the incident. We are also filing a complaint with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) calling for an investigation of the experiment and asking the agency to file all appropriate charges at the federal level. We believe that the experiment was a violation of federal law because it was not conducted in a USDA-approved facility, nor was it screened by the required oversight committee.

The current whereabouts of the dog who was used in the disgraceful experiment are unknown. We also do not know if he or she received appropriate—and surely needed—professional veterinary medical care.

Dear [ Decision Maker ],

(Edit Letter Below)

I was shocked and outraged to learn that Clay County officials locked a homeless dog from the county animal shelter in a county vehicle on a warm day, evidently to see if he or she would die. The crude experiment was reportedly conducted to try to explain away another dog's death, which was possibly the result of county negligence. If the first incident might have been negligence, the second certainly was! I urge you to do the following immediately: -- Outfit all Clay County Animal Control vehicles with air conditioning -- Institute an enforceable policy prohibiting officers from putting animals' lives at risk during transport -- Join PETA in officially requesting a criminal investigation into this serious matter -- Release information regarding the whereabouts of the dog used in experiment as well as verification that he or she has received needed veterinary attention Thank you. Diamond died of capture myopathy.

They did not put the poor homeless dog in a county vehicle with no ventilation to see if it would die. That is spin, that is a lie.

The dog was put in an animal control dog truck box designed to carry animals with full ventilation and the fans were on. They were checking to see how the animals body heat effected the inside temperature of the dog box. The dog was never in any danger, was continualy monitored, and no harm came to the dog.

No cruelty or torture was inflicted on the dog that was in the dog box.

This is being spun way out of control and is being made out to be something it is not.

You should get all your facts before being shocked.

If this is true..and that it was to see how the dogs body heat effected the box, WHY IS IT THE DOGS TEMPERATURE WAS NEVER TAKEN AND DOCUMENTED ON HIS REPORT? I think someone is giving you the wrong information. OMG why didn't they use one of their own dogs for the experiment? And where is the dog now?

Not the dogs temperature the inside of the box temp. I don't know I did not write his report, call and ask him.

No need....I think his report said it all. It will be handled by the real professionals now.

I somehow feel that the people involved in this experiment will be looking for new employment...I just hope its not involving animals.

I am not worried either let the pro's do what they will. Nothing cruel or torturous was done.

The real pity is they will be wasting their time when they could be focusing on real problems. This too will turn out to be nothing all because a few nut jobs have an agenda. What a waste.
