Saturday last day for free Fay-related disposal

Saturday is the last day to bring large amounts of Tropical Storm Fay-related yard waste - such as downed trees or large limbs - to the Clay County landfill for free disposal.

Last month, the County Commission temporarily waived the dumping fees for yard waste stemming from Fay. Also waived were the fees for wood debris from docks that were damaged or destroyed in the storm.

The waiver ends Monday, but the landfill is closed Sunday so the last day of the free disposal is effectively Saturday, said county spokeswoman Jackie Slaybaugh.

If subsequent storms create additional large amounts of yard waste or dock debris, the commission may reinstate the fee waiver, she said.

Residents who brought Fay-related debris to the landfill prior to the fee waiver will be reimbursed.

Landfill fees for disposing large amounts of yard waste and building materials are typically $47 per ton or 47 cents per 20 pounds after 500 pounds.

Residents who hire a commercial hauler to take their storm debris to the landfill must accompany the hauler and provide an affidavit that the waste is from their property. And dock debris must be clearly storm-damaged.

The landfill is at 3545 Rosemary Hill Road, off County Road 315 near Green Cove Springs. Today’s hours are 7:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. For more information, call the county Environmental Services Department at 284-6374 or go to www.claycountygov.com.

Temporary Waiving of Fees for Disposal of Storm-Related Yard Trash and Dock Debris
Green Cove Springs, FL - Residents of Clay County are advised that on August 26, 2008 the Clay County Board of Commissioners approved the temporary waiving of fees for disposal of storm-related yard trash and dock debris at the county’s landfill. The waiver of disposal fees will be in effect for the next twelve days, ending on Monday, September 8, 2008.

Please note that residents who hire a commercial hauler to take yard waste or dock debris to the Rosemary Hill landfill, 3545 Rosemary Hill Road, Green Cove Springs, must accompany the hauler to the station and provide an affidavit that the waste is a result of Tropical Storm Fay and from their residential property.

Advanced Disposal Services will continue to collect yard waste curbside per their normal weekly schedule in unincorporated areas of Clay County. All leaves and small yard debris should be placed in a 40-gallon can or heavy-duty plastic trash bag for collection.

Collection of containerized yard trash is unlimited; however no can or bag may exceed 50 lbs. All stumps, trees and limbs should be no longer than 4 feet in length and 50 lbs in weight (any one piece). A maximum total of 5 cubic yards of non containerized yard trash will be collected per week.

Residents who brought post-storm yard trash to the landfill from Thursday, August 21 through Tuesday, August 26 and were charged a disposal fee will be reimbursed those fees.

For more information, call the Clay County Environmental Services Department at 284-6374.
