Resigned, but Second ThoughtsNow that Debbie Ricks has lost the Supervisor of Elections race, I guess that she has had second thoughts about the resignation she turned in to the City of Green Cove Springs. As the date for qualifying was approaching the final hour it seems that Debbie Ricks went to put her name back in the hat! The City Attorney (Mr. Arnold) and the Mayor (Mr. Buchanan) informed her that if she tried to qualify it would be against the law. She stormed off in a huff to report to her mentor. What did you think of that J. B. J., J. D. R., and D. L. R.? Submitted by scoopb4ugo on Fri, 08/29/2008 - 10:55pm.
I am reasonably sure, but I would like to know positively. If you can find out and let us all know that would be great! Thanks Joe. Joe

Just a question....not to be arguermentative or anything...but....what does it matter....I know the Secretary for City Hall very well and I trust that if there were a problem with Debbie Ricks qualifying Margie would have let her know....anyway I will find-out even though it is water under the bridge.... joe

I was in City Hall between 4:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. meeting with Mr. Bowles, just down the hall from Margie Robertson's office. From where I was sitting, I could see all approaches to her office. Ms. Ricks did not come to City Hall. I agree with Joe that Ms. Ricks could have qualified. However, I also agree with Mr. Arnold that she could not hold office beyond January 6, 2009, which is the effective date of the irrevocable letter of resignation that Ms. Ricks submitted to the City in June. The irrevocable letter of resignation is effective through the remaining duration of her term, which expires in May of 2010. So, what's the point of running? I cannot imagine Ms. Ricks wanting to dump even more money into a political campaign than she already has. Mike Kelter, PE The other Mayor

Thanks Mikey, I am just trying to "keep the air clean". I assumed that someone with some "insight" would see the thread get started and help with the "clearing of the air". Joe

I don't mind being accused of stuff, but I was in my office that afternoon. I do recall asking questions about the process a month earlier in a council meeting. A special election was going to cost the tax payers of Green Cove Springs money. No where in state history that I can recall has someone resigned and then re-filed for their seat prior to vacating it. I think that would circumvent the whole process for all politicians. But if anyone else would have filed other that Mr. Snow, it would have cost the tax payers money and realistically, why should the tax payers have to pay for a special election, because she or anyone else has higher political aspirations. She has been a good public servant during her term and while we don't agree on issues, she loves Green Cove Springs & put 100% to the job and I wish her the best of luck. John E. I am not totally discounting your blog, I personally called City Hall at about 10 minutes until 5 p.m. and talked to someone who would have told me that Mrs. Ricks attempted to qualify....( I agree that she could have attempted to qualify after I called)..
As far as Mayor Buchanan informing anyone of anything you might mean Councilman Buchanan, as he is no longer the mayor. I Promise you that I will know the full story by tomorrow afternoon. (not that I really matter to anyone about anything anyway) and will be happy to repost...
