Your new State Attorney Angela Corey!

Congratulation Duval, Clay and Nassau

Proclaiming "a new and glorious day in the State Attorney's office," Angela Corey won a landslide vote to win the top prosecutor post less than two years after she was fired as an assistant State Attorney.

Corey beat chief assistant state attorney Jay Plotkin by a nearly two-to-one margin in Tuesday's vote to become the first newly-elected State Attorney in the fourth judicial circuit in 17 years.

"The fact that it's this overwhelming is the public making a statement that they want to see new momentum like this in the State Attorney's office," Corey told reporters at her victory party. "I think you guys will be pleased in what we have to present as far as our structure and the way we'll conduct business in the office."

Corey earned the early endorsements of all three Sheriffs in the district and the largest police union in Northeast Florida. Jacksonville Sheriff John Rutherford believes Corey is ready to lead a prosecutors' office that often leads the state in death penalty cases.

"This community wants the police and the State Attorney's office working together to go after [the bad guys,]" Rutherford said.

Chief Assistant State Attorney Jay Plotkin was humble in his concession, telling supporters "I have full confidence Ms. Corey cares about the people of the community and will do the right thing."

Plotkin offered his help in the four-months long transition period before Corey takes over the post. Shorstein also offered his support.

I do believe I saw you Judith, on one of the television news casts on election night.

Read44,

I’ve had several folk say they saw me. The TV cameras were sure there all night. I am so Proud of Angela, so proud to say I know her and so happy for the 4th judicial circuit. (Clay, Duval and Nassau) I am still so overwhelmed by the message we all sent to Plotkin and Shorstein in that Landslide Victory.

To me it has personal meaning as I said to Angela on Tuesday night.  If the person who murdered my daughter is never brought to justice, at least we got the guy who let him walk the street free. It has been time for a change in that office for a long time and this is a Historical Change for our City!  I am Blessed to have played a small part.  I am Blessed to have met some wonderful friends along the campaign trail, and We are all Blessed that we will have a State Attorney we can be proud of Angela Corey

In her speech after the election she said something about the victims; I had the feeling she was looking at you at that time.

 Read 44,

I wish all of you could meet her and get to know her heart. She is no God and she does not pretend to be. She is someone who wants to make a difference and she knows to do that she will have to depend on the dedication of others with the same integrity and passion that she has just like she did during this campaign.  We know that a lot of voters voted against Shorstien and Plotkin, but most of her votes came from people who voted FOR her.  She has a hard job ahead of her and she knows it.  But she has 60,273 who have her back and about 50 of us willing to take on Anything and Anyone to ensure her success.

It will not be long before FOP Lodge President Nelson Cuba and Corey have a falling out. They were all smiles and hugs on victory night, but it will be a different story in four years. Mark it down. The FOP will have the big stick out after her.

Magnumforce I agree, especially if she is as dedicated as everyone says she is. I hope she has a will of steel too. She will need it to fight them off.

 Magnumfoce & Leia

Nelson Cuba stands up for his men as he should, (most leaders do) but I don’t see him as an unreasonable man.  Plus Angela has no problem speaking her mind nor does Cuba.  Their relationship is one of respect for each other and the desire to do the right thing.  Those two offices don’t have to be at odds with each other.  They shouldn’t be.  They play on the same team.  It is like saying the Offense of a Football Team should be at odds with Special Teams?  That is just Dumb!

The police are citizens too just like you and me, they are not aliens. If they do something wrong the same laws that they are sworn to use to protect and serve us pertain to them as well. Angela would have no problem taking a Police Officer who has dishonored his/her badge by the hand and delivering him to prison as she would any street Thug. Believe That!  And what I know of Cuba he would lead the way!

I do understand your skepticism having lived with 17 years of Harry/Jay administration when it truly was about who you know.  But in 4 months that era will be over.

So instead of making bets on her failure how about Praying for her Success! Or Wishing her the Best!  After all if she fails, we fail!

Ms. Chapple

I never implied that I expected Angela Corey to fail- I am not sure where that came from.

I do not share your feelings about Nelson Cuba, however.

Sorry about that.

You must know a different  man than I.   Nelson has a lot of Fire and calls then as he sees them. Like I said he speaks his mind and is no shrinking violet exactly what I expect from the President of the FOP.   We will have to agree to disagree on this one.  Regardless Angee can deal with Nelson and the police.

PS:  I am happy you corrected me about wanting Angee to fail, I don’t want to put words in your mouth. It was just your blog agreeing with MagnumForce making odds that she will fall out with Cuba in the next 4 years sounded a lot like failure to me.

Have a Good Night and it was nice blogging with you.

You won't have to wait four years. I give them 6 months before someone is in a snit. I guess that will depend on JSO officers staying out of trouble.

I believe Corey will be a fine state attorney. I have watched Nelson Cuba for the past couple of years and I will put money on it the first time he doesn’t get his way at the SAO he will be ranting and raving. I have been around the system for 30 years and I know how COPS get turned off when the SAO doesn’t prosecute a case they have worked hard to make. I may get to remind you of this conversation sooner than the end of her term.

Magnum I agree fully with you mine for different reasons. A prime example is what just happened to Tanner in the 7th district. It’s the thin blue line and that will never change.

Submitted by Magnumforce on Fri, 08/29/2008 - 9:36am.

R. J. Larizza who defeated Tanner is a personal friend of mine. He will do the right thing and his children and grandchildren are not having run-ins with the law like Tanners daughter and grandsons. What took Tanner down is he involved himself personally with his daughters case then he refused to allow the Grand Jury report to become public. He spent over a $100K of bad check fine money that was earmarked for domestic violence victims as his defense fund. It doesn’t get anymore improper than that. I bumped in to this self centered righteous Jack--- (Tanner) in the Dunkin Donut shop in Palatka about four months ago. First time I ever met the man and I could tell he was a fake. He is just where he needs to be at home making his grown daughter behave and his grown grandsons. Maybe he can teach them a new profession besides being drunks, and burglars.

People are human beings and deserve to be treated as such. It doesn't matter what they do they are still humans. I think more than a couple of years in law enforcement they all think the only criminals are those on the street. While I tend to feel there is equal violations in law enforcement but treated differently for those protected in that thin line.

Lots of reading for the holiday weekend and a toast hoping you or your family never become a victim of the thin blue line. Of course that was what the story "Don't Bother" was about too. Of course they targeted Tanner and Taylor. Yet when Lancaster's family members one arrested for treatment of prisoners in the jail and filing false reports were never targeted. As a matter of fact two of them were arrested for filing false reports. Funny how that works in law enforcement. Don't cross the thin blue line.

Views come from different exposures in people's life. I would expect no less from you. Seeing which side of the fence you are on.

I will say Ms Corey will experience the picture on both sides of the issues very soon. We can see where she falls when the time arises. She will be hammered when she can't prosecute due to different reasons. She will be hammered when she sees wrong doing in not just JSO but the CCSO and NCSO, and try to help those vicitms. Just be sure she will be hammered.

Let's just hope she don't get into one of these.

Sam,

You and the other 5 Plotkin sour grapes supporters need to take your sour grapes and go make wine.  Angela and her newly announced chief Assistant Dan McCarthy, a career military man and retired Navy prosecutor will do very well for us all.

You guys need to just get over it.  The race was not even close, it was an Old Fashion Can of Kick A____.  A Landslide Victory.  A Shellacking. 2-1 Victory!  If I were a Plotkin supporter I would just go and sit down somewhere, burn my T-shirt and try to find out how I could get a refund from Jay because I had been bamboozled, hoodwinked led astray and run amuck! You don’t have time to attack the Corey Machine; you need to spend your time pondering your poor judgment and helping Jay with his interviewing sills and proof his resume.

Cuba and Angee can disagree without being disagreeable.  That is possible you know.  Everyone knows that there will be cases that may not have charges filed, and cases that are plea bargained.  We got that.  Because of Angela’s relationship with the police it is her intention that the police are involved in continuous training so that these cases are few.

The primary is over, there were winners and there were losers.  Most of the losers went out with class, some promising to return and run the next time.  Most of the winners were gracious in their victory, and some winners and their supporters are winning ugly.

I'm not going to say anything else about Angela Corey.  She won, the office is hers, and the next four years will say more about her, good or bad, than anything I can write.  Mrs. Chapple is correct that if Corey loses, we all lose.  Magnumforce has stated that she will have problems with the FOP; we will see.

Corey is the state attorney, for good or bad we are stuck with her, and though I haven't read any negative comments about her from anyone except myself, there is no point in bad-mouthing someone befoe they have had a chance to prove themself in office.

However, I think that portraying Cuba as a hero is going to be a very hard sell in a Clay County blogsite.  Cuba is not only the head of the Jacksonville FOP, he is also the head of the Jacksonville Safety Officers 527, the group that sent us all the "vote against incompetance" flyer.  Despite this flyer, 55% of the voters picked Beseler for reelection.

Follow the trail of logic...Cuba sends out a negative flyer...people don't believe what the flyer says...therefore people think that someone lied to them, and that someone is Cuba.

The only thing I hope for is that in the next election that Cuba and friends have the good common sense and ethical sense to keep their big, fat FOP noses out of Clay politics.

Mr. Cuba and the FOP were looking for a new poster boy before the Folio story ever hit the street. As soon as they knew it was coming and saw the MT comment in the TU a week or so earlier they knew they had lost. They had picked the wrong horse for that race but had to pull out all the stops just the same.

They had already invested way too much time and money in their choice. I don't know who their choice will be 4 years from now but you can get some pretty good odds from me that it is not going to be MT. We'll just have to watch how the wind blows to see who comes out of that crap storm to be the next designated hitter for the FOP.

You can also get some pretty good odds from me that they will not stay out of Clay politics. They want a Union puppet as the Sheriff and will keep trying. People like him just have too much ego to think they can lose and certainly not more than once.

I wasn’t in my Green & White and on duty. I was riding my iron horse, and I recognized Tanner when he walked in. I laugh at the donut jokes when people throw them out when on duty. One time when I was assigned to patrol a lady called and complained there were two patrol cars at Dunkin Donuts. I said really two? She said yes, I replied they are in trouble because there were suppose to be four there.

That is absolutely priceless!  Thank you so much for sharing that.  My side still hurts from laughing.
