Thoughts on the Beltway

In my travels which have been extensive throughout this great land of ours I plan my route using interstates when possible and looking for what appears to be the best route. Some prove to be better than others, for example: Approaching Atlanta on I-75 there is a “By-Pass to Florida”. WRONG, it is a very long way around, kind of like trying to scratch your elbow by reaching behind your back. Much better to time the trip to cross Atlanta at Non-Rush Hour and just sail straight through downtown. When faced with a toll-road I gladly pay the toll to ease the trip. When I go to Disney World I pick up Florida’s Turnpike at I-75, pay the toll and I’m there.

If I were in some far off region and planning a trip to Florida’s east coast again I would consult the map. When I saw this Outer Belt TOLLWAY I would expect to pay a reasonable toll and facilitate my trip. BUT, when I saw signs telling me I need some kind of a PASS or transponder to get on the TOLLWAY I would blow right by, just like I blow right by the Disney Tickets Signs I see on my trips there.

Mr. Rutledge, during our debate, described such a system where you Pre-Pay or are billed and there has been much discussion of the technical issues involved. Mr. Rutledge failed to acknowledge that where such systems are used that there are still Cash lanes available such as you can see throughout South Florida. From Mr. Rutledge’s description the other night Cash Lanes are not an option.

I said, during the debate, that the New Shands Bridge needs to be toll-free. That can be accomplished by an On-Off ramp on each side of the river with Tollway Tollgates before and after that span the roadway. Overall a FREEWAY would be better with a BETTER ROUTE across clay county.

I have heard one of my opponents refer the to Beltway as a done deal (that’s a paraphrase). To get any positive changes to the plan has about 0.0001% chance of success. If nothing is done change has a 100% chance of failure. I will give it my best shot when I am your commissioner.

I welcome your intelligent input to this issue.

JD;

There are two things that I can see that might stop this tollway. One is to force the issue of paying property tax. The other is to force the issue of requiring toll booths.

They have already said that either one of these was a deal killer.

There is perhaps a third and that is to have Constitutional Amendment 1 fail.

Then maybe we could get some input from the real people affected by this project. The voters and tax payers of Clay County.

If we're both there, you won't be fighting that battle by yourself. You'll have at least one other person on your side.
