What is Wrong with People These Days
I recently saw this news item on Fox News. The video shows a 78 year old man in Connecticut attempting to cross the street. This poor man gets hit by a car and not a single person stops to help him. Cars just continue to drive around him and people on the street just watch. What in the hell is wrong with people these days? See the Link in the first comment on the thread you won't beleive your eyes. Submitted by Angela on Sat, 06/07/2008 - 9:15am.
How about seeing if you can remove the first link because it is causing problems with the website because it was incorrectly done. If you are unable to remove the link notify Jonathan and asked him to fix it. Thanks

I can't help but wonder if this is partially the result of good Samaritans who end up being in trouble with the law or being sued. Some will do the right thing with no thought to their own liability on down the line, many don't and then you have to factor in the reality that many do not see a fellow human being as part of the family of man and they just don't care. I think you have more of those people in heavily urbanized areas. When I was living in NYC one of my girlfriends fell on the winter sidewalk ice and had a compound fracture to her knee. Not only did no one help her, walked over her, around her........there were even a few who hurled obsecenities because she was in their way. I lived in New London CT for 4yrs, and it is hard to rate which of the two places was more unfriendly. I can only tell you that the day I got on the south side of the Mason Dixon line and knew I would never live north of it again was a great day in my life.

Marsha I am not sure if Connecticut has a good samaritian law on the books or not that protects citizens from legal action when they come to the rescue of other citizens. I know I was born and raised in a big inner city on the east coast myslef. I could never look myself in the mirror again if I just sat back and did nothing while another human being was in danger or suffering. I don't know what is going on in this situation, but I do hope you are wrong about your intitial hunch that maybe folks are afraid of legal action or that it may be an urban problem. Maybe I am being naive but I still beleive in the compassion of the human heart. I truly hope this is just an isolated tragedy demonstrating one aspect of humanity at its worst. My good Sam neighbor mowed his neighbor's lawn for years, she is a widow, living with her invaild mother, children all grown and gone. One day her water pipe breaks, she calls a plummer, gets a bill for $400 dollars, and gives it to the good Sam neighbor to pay because it is his fault the pipe broke. Now she has to pay someone to mow her lawn cause the rest of us refuse to help her out. So it may have been that some of the bystanders have been burned before or maybe something like a deer caught in the headlights, they just couldn't believe what they had just witnessed. Don;t let that good ole southern hospitality fool ya most of us are just nosy as hell

My husband and I are currently stationed in Pittsburgh, PA. I live less than 3 miles from downtown, on an extremely busy intersection ( right on the corner ! ) that carries people to and from the downtown Pittsburgh area. The city has yet to put a light in at this intersection,it's almost at the top of a massive hill and the blind spots are pretty bad. Even with an average of 4-6 bad accidents and probably 10-12 fender benders on this corner every year. With every accident I've seen, there is always a complete lack of neighbors and passersby wanting to get involved.I always call, I always go outside and check to see if people are alright. I've had little kids and babies involved in accidents staying in my house waiting for the police to keep them from the cold and from standing on the sidewalk close to all the heavy and fast traffic. Two years ago there was a particularly bad accident involving a motorcycle at about 11:30 at night. It was half snowing and half raining, and this poor man was just lying half broken in the middle of the road. No one stopped!Even the other vehicle involved just took off.I ended up outside with two blankets over the man and holding an umbrella over his head.I sat crouched over him in the dark, with no lights in the middle of the street with cars whizzing by at 45 miles an hour. I was scared to try and move him from the road due to his injuries.Where I was kneeling in the middle of the road like that was extrememly dangerous in hindsight, and I'm surprised I wasnt hit. However at the time I wasnt thinking about that, just hoping the man was going to be alright and trying to keep the cold and rain off of him until the police could arrive. Not to mention he was conscious and scared to death, I'll never know but I hope that even a perfect stranger there with him was some comfort.Whether he would live or die that night I will never know, but at least he was not alone! I hate it thats not the first instinct of every human being that sees another person in pain or hurting.Makes me wonder what our world is coming to when its always ' me first!", what a selfish mentality.I dont know when or how we as a species came to this point, and I dont know if we can turn it around. It's very scary to raise children in a world where our moral compasses and sense of duty to our fellow man is becoming more and more nonexsistent. I myself will be praying for the man who was hit.My thoughts and heart go out to his family during this difficult time. I hope he will be alright.
