Uncle Rich, Clueless Again

OK, once again, Uncle Rich found himself on the fuzzy end of clueless.  I need the help of those of you with teen or pre teen children  It's something I just heard @ on a health report & have never heard of before.

WARNING!!  I'm not going into detail because this is graphic & sexual in nature.  If you have heard @ it, you'll know what I'm talking @  It's called a "rainbow party," & it seems to be getting more popular despite the obvious risks to health.  Have any of you heard of this before?  If you have & want to reply, may I suggest that we all try to keep it clean?  I'm really not sure how far we can push the limits of propriety, even in an open forum like this.  Thanks for any info.  If you don't wish to respond, it's quite understandable.  I just find it a bit remarkable, yet, not so much.  JATFUR.

I have heard of it in an urban legend sort of way.  I've never heard firsthand accounts or known anyone w/a first hand account.  My understanding is that kids, youth, etc. have a party and collect the popular colored plastic bracelets in exchange for performing certain -ahem- indescreet acts, shall we say?  At the end of the night some would have collected a whole "rainbow" of colored bracelets.

Central Girl,

Thanks for the info.  I have heard of the bracelets, I guess I just didn't connect the two.  Urban legend, notwithstanding, As I said, I heard it on a health segment on National Public Radio, backed with some stats.  I find it disturbing, but not shocking.  Indiscreet acts are now in the domain of health issues that can help destroy a whole generation of youth.  I have to wonder how many parents are aware of this phenomenon.

I don't recall ever seeing your user name.  If you're new, welcome to the blogohood.  We have a wide assortment of people who bring a wide assortment of topics.  We yak, we argue, we learn, we have fun.  Sometimes we comment that there are 5 people on line & 298 people just looking in.  We welcome all. Test the waters & then jump in.  Once again, thanks for the info.  JATFUR.

Just to clarify, I don't mean to imply that all kids who wear colored bracelets got them at a rainbow party.  In fact, I bet very few did.  Also the bracelet trend seems to be waning.  Lets hope the parties are too.

I've been a reader for a while, but rarely log in--only when I have info to share.  Thanks for the welcome though!

Thank you for this type of string.  It is important as parents that we know the trends in Texting/parties/dress/cell phones/friends,etc to know what is going on in our kids lives.

I grew up in the 80's and to my knowledge none of this was prevalent because we were a little more naive as were our parents before us.  This generation needs guidance and watching more than any other before us, in my opinion.

Thanks again for the enlightenment and if nothing else if I see a bracelet of this sort I will at least be knowledgeable of a possibility.

Solo

Did you do your research?  I seem to recall an article in the TU some time ago about this, as I recall it raised (no pun intended) a fuss with readers over the topic.

If my old memory serves me right, it (rainbow party) refers to young ladies, well, not really ladies, wearing different color lipstick.  Then young men (well not really men but more like males acting like former President Clinton) would then through the night try to 'collect' the different colors on certain parts of their anatomy (think Monica Lewinsky).  But it was ok, it didn't meet the presidential definition of sex.

Thus the rainbow.

Could be an urban legend --- Hope this helps - -

CCC,

The only research I did was post this blog & hoped to be enlightened.  I don't recall the TU article, although I might have heard something similar to this a while back.  Once again, attack of the the grey cell monsters.
