To My Conservative Republican Fellow Bloggers

My fellow bloggers,

In the past, & I assume it will continue into the future, I've had various comments on the actions of so-called conservative Republicans.  Some of you, in turn, have had differences with my comments & that'd the way it should be.  I've also asked that with all the different comments, none of you had provided me with a definitive definition of a conservative Republican.  I think I may have some good news for you & me.

While I'm writing this, I'm also listening to the Diane Rhiem (sp) show on NPR.  The guest is former Congressman from OK., Mickey Edwards, conservative (R) 1977-1993.  He is also a lecturer at Princeton U.  He wrote a book called, "Reclaiming Conservatism," & from what I've heard so far, this book is on my to buy list.  He is giving a fascinating insight of his opinions, along with facts & dates.  No way that I'm NOT going to read his book.  No disrespect to my fellow bloggers of the conservative stripe, but I think that Congressman Edwards, with all of his years of experience as a conservative Republican, might provide  in depth knowlege on a better scale of depth, understanding and knowlege than any of you, or I can provide.

As an aside.  In case the subtlety escaped any one, some on these blogs have labelled NPR as a left wing &/or liberal leaning media source.  Just to let you know, he is being interviewed and is being allowed to answer, & doing it well, with no shouting, no dogmatic political rhetoric and no egotistical pontificating.  I have to say, TOLD YA SO!

As I said, this book is going on my to buy list.  Whether one is right, left or independent, from what I've heard so far, the book sounds as if it will be a great learning experience.  JATFUR.  Toodles for now.

Just because your a registered Republican does not mean you are conservative......just look at Bush and McCain.....

Here are what Conservatives stand for:

1. Life: For all human beings, from conception to natural death;
2. Liberty: Freedom of conscience and actions for the self-governed individual;
3. Family: One husband and one wife with their children as divinely instituted;
4. Property: Each individual's right to own and steward personal property without government burden;
5. Constitution: and Bill of Rights interpreted according to the actual intent of the Founding Fathers;
6. States' Rights: Everything not specifically delegated by the Constitution to the federal government is reserved for the state and local jurisdictions;
7. American Sovereignty: American government committed to the protection of the borders, trade, and common defense of Americans, and not entangled in foreign alliances.

You said:

>>1. Life: For all human beings, from conception to natural death;

Hhmmm..... So you are against the death penalty, certainly an unnatural death if there ever was one.

I'm surprised by that :)

>>5. Constitution: and Bill of Rights interpreted according to the actual intent of the Founding Fathers;

Ummm. The founding fathers are dead now.  I'm afraid you will be stuck with differing interpretations of what their actual intent may have been.

Thanks for the book info.... I'll have to read that one also.

I beleive ALL books are worthy of reading. Knowledge is power.

I am happy to hear NPR is willing to give a conservative prospective and plug this book.

I would like to warn though, that one book, from one person, should not be thought of as the "end game" and diffinative answer to the deffinition of a "conervative republican".

Solo,

Sorry for my last comment, I don't mean to unintentionally hijack your original intent. Just couldn't resist this one time....

I'll shut up now...

Smuncey,

Good points, but.....since you & others have accused me of being a left wing liberal, it may shock you to know that I agree with some of your assertions.  But like TH said, one person is not going to provide the definitive definition.  But on to your points.

#1.  I agree, with certain exceptions.  I don't advocate the death penalty.  I advocate the right of a person to end their life.  It IS, after all, their life. It is the business of no one else.

# 2.  I agree, as long as it breaks no laws or injures another.

#3.  I disagree.  Divinely instituted?  Please, I just finished lunch.  You show me the proof, then we'll talk.

#4.  I agree, as long as it is within the framework of the law.

#5.  I tend to agree.  Consideration must be given towards the discoveries in science, medicine, technology & the like.  There are some things that the founding fathers could not know or even imagine.  Speaking of books, I would recommend two touching this subject.  Head & Heart, American Christianities by Gary Wills & Founding Faith by Steven Waldman.  After all, knowlege IS power.  It might provide some insight.

#6.  I tend to agree.  I also advocate the intentions of the 14th Amendment.

#7.  I agree.  I only wish that Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld & the rest would also.  By the by, after going back in past blogs, you seemed to have did a bit of a turn around on Bush.  Maybe you are starting to see the light.  Time will tell.

Bigmig,

Darn good points also.  If you read the book, I hope you enjoy & learn.

TH,

I totally agree.  But one has to start some place.

Bigmig,

Hijack away.  Old show biz saying.  If you're going to steal, steal from the best. For proof, I offer Smuncey's tag line.   Badda boom, badda bing.  JATFUR.
