Cat Colonies

Hi All.  I am new to blogging on the My Clay Sun Website.  I was wondering if someone could help me out with a term I heard the other day - "Cat Colonies".  What are these and where are these?  Thank you, Amie

Perhaps they were speaking of feral cat colonies? If so here is one link about feral cats:

If not, then I'm at a loss. Though perhaps the Mustang Ranch in Nevada might qualify. Innocent

Amie,

Welcome to the blogohood.  If you want cats, the Ridgewood/Ridgecrest areas have tons.  Boy, do they have cats.  All kinds, all colors, mostly roaming around.  Drive around 24/7, 365 & take your pick.  Plenty from which to choose.  No lines, no waiting.  JATFUR.

Cat colonies are a large number of discarded cats that have banded together at a place where feeding occurs. For example, behind a restaurant, or boat ramp. Some of these cats were once someones pets, some were born feral, they are usually maintained by a group of cat lovers who usually if they are legit, trap, sterlize and inoculate then release back out into the area they were caught in.

These cat colonies can number up to 50 to 60 or more. The caregivers in some cases, build cat houses and place them in the areas the cats inhabit. For example, behind the K-Mart. There has been a colony there for years. There is one behind the WinnDixie in Middleburg.

The problem comes when these colonies are not maintained properly by someone who just starts out feeding a few cats but then they become 60 in no time. They pass on decease to our other healthy animals, they eat all of the lizards and birds in the area of a colony. They also become a nusance in some cases by becoming destructive to private property.

I am not opposed to the colonies and myself am a cat lover however they must be managed properly by catch, sterlize and vaccinated.

So Amie, hopefully that answers your question. A cat house in this instance has 4 legs instead of 2!

Mike,

That's not cat-colony that's cat-house. Those cats are welcomed and well-maintained in that house.  Dennis is making a killing off those "cat's"! Cool

Unlike the ones that cookie referred to... Of course I thought those were closer to the 103rd street area not behind your local grocery store. Hmmm...times are changing! Groceries & cats all in one place.

I for one, don't have that much to say @ cat colonies.  A little BBQ sauce, a nice Zinfandell, a little candlelight............

I got pictures of feral cat colonies.  the mcdonald's on 220 and college has one, the post office on Fleming isle has on, the little store across from harvey's in green cove has a giant one.    I started taking pictures of them as I run across them...\\\ ^_^ ///

Sorry @ my memory.  What was I thinking?  I forgot @ the garlic & rosemary.  A pinch of kosher salt & pepper to taste & OY!  A feast du jour.  I prefer BBQ, but roasting, as long as you use a water pan for moisture, is a delicacy.  Some people like a bit of lemon juice.  The choice is yours.  I think I saw it on Emiril once.  Or maybe Good Eats.  There goes the memory again.  Either way, what a great renewable resource.  And cheap too.  Got to remember those rising food prices we've been reading about.  Plus, you don't have to travel far, what with the price of gas & all.  Bon appetit!  JACTFUR.  (Just Another Culinary Tip From Uncle Rich)
