Creepy Appraiser

I wanted to take the time to share a story to all of my fellow female blogger to beware of creepy appraisers.

I had my home appraised last week by the most unprofessional appraiser I've ever come into contact with. I was alone in my home when he came as he was scheduled to do. The problem came when he decided that he was all that and a basket of cookies and began standing almost elbow to elbow with me and started making small talk. He then began to touch my arm and shoulder area when he was talking and trying to be funny. I was so upset by the scum bag that I would not accompany him on the tour of my home but instead told him to go by himself and I stayed in my kitchen.

My point in telling about this incident, is that just because someone says they are an appraiser for instance does not mean they aren't there to cause you harm if your by yourself. Just be careful!

You need to tell someone about this, like the morgtage company or the appraiser company. In the sexual harassment department, one thing they state over and over again is if it "makes a reasonable person uncomfortable" it should be reported. Sounds like this is way past that boundary. You be on the look out to see if he just "happens" to drop by again and call the Sheriff's dept 264-6512

CREEP with a capital CREEP!

Cookie,

You would be surprised how many homes I've been in where as the Appraiser I've had to deal with some creepy homeowners, not to mention the filth I've witnessed that caused me to run home and take a bath.

Some people are touchy feely and don't mean to creep people out, did you say something to him?

I know it's not anyone out of our Jacksonville Office because it's all female except for my Husband and he's not a touchy feely kinda guy.  He altogether avoids such situations when it's possible, and there are parts of towns in different areas I don't go into without him.

I seriously doubt your Lender would do anything if you told them other then to provide empathy.  If you know the name of the Appraiser I would try to find out if they have a Boss.  If not you can file a complaint with the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation.  You can find them at MyFlorida.com

Cookie;

I'm pretty sure that I've seen something from Marsha about her being a certified appraiser. She may know someone local to talk to also.

Please don't let this go unreported.

Thanks for the information. My husband was furious!

Marsha,

I didn't know that appraisal was your profession. I'm sure that there are very reputable folks in your office and I'm doubly sure the jerk wasn't your husband as this was a younger man.

I don't live in an undesireable location unless you consider the Ravines undesireable!

Don't jump to such conclusions when all I was doing was warning unsuspecting females. Of course, I know the company that he came from and plan on making a formal complaint. Your so sensitive.

Cookie, the man who came to your house may have been exhibiting nothing other than his own personality and may have been unaware of your impression of him.

The fact remains that his was in your home and making you uncomfortable. You should have told him, simply and bluntly, that he was making you uncomfortable and wanted him to confine himself to the job he was there to perform.  The likelihood is that he would have changed his behavior, and concentrated on getting his job done and getting out of the house.

You know, Cookie, we men can't even always figure out when our own wives or girlfriends are uncomfortable.  Asking the appraiser to make a snap judgment on your comfort level is asking a lot, but you making your discomfort clear would have solved the problem.

You read that in a way it was not intended. You made a reference to people who have Professional reasons to come to your home can still intend harm. I was merely pointing out the other side of the fence (my side) that the same threat exists as well as a few others.  We've had Appraisers attacked by dogs, had guns pulled on them because the property is in the middle of a divorce battle, and the list goes on and on.

I was not being sensetive, you misunderstood.  I'm well aware there are bad peeps in the Profession and have no issue at all with anything you said.

Perhaps I should have empathized before talking about what it's like on this side.

Mr. Mann,

I appreciate your input from a man's perspective but I also know when someone thinks they are more , shall I say, "sexy" then they really are.

I didn't say a thing to him about how he made me feel but you can believe he got the idea when I moved away from him every time he took a step towards me. I was in my home by myself with no self defense as I am very small.

I guess his mother must have really told him how cute he was while growing up.  I work as an executive and I am fully aware of how one is supposed to act in one's profession. But thanks anyway for your thoughts. Oh, by the way, I enjoy reading your threads. And of course, Finder is a favorite as well.

Your right, I did take it the wrong way. I'm sure that you come into contact with all types. Had I known your profession, I'd called upon you! No problem here. Thanks for replying.

The reason I asked you if you knew the name of the Company or individual is because there are a great many homeowners who don't.  People forget, or are busy and don't pay attention.  They don't know the name of their Mtg Company, they've never even seen an Appraisal on their home.

Anytime you purchase, or refinance you are entitled to a copy of the Report once the loan has closed.  Your Lender is supposed to provide you with a copy in your closing documents. I believe it's about to be made into law because too many Homeowners never see them, and by law the Appraiser can give it only to the Lender who ordered it unless we get written permission from them to release it.  Make sure you ask for a copy!

I'd have to say this is an excellent motivation to go buy yourself a nice can of Pepper Spray. Considering you yourself said you are small, I think having some type of defensive tool at hand would make you feel largely more comfortable when you have to deal with strangers in your home.

You buy insurance for everything else right?

It might make you feel a little bit more in control when someone crosses a line like that, and give you the confidence to speak up and tell Mr.Creepy to keep his hands to himself.

I personally keep a 9 Millimeter in the safe, a baseball bat in the closet, and Pepper Spray in my purse.I like to have options :)

The last thing anyone expects is to be accosted in their own house. I’m sure you were more than just uncomfortable. Could it be that you may have even been a bit scared? No person has the right to actually touch another person without permission. Legally I think that is called Battery. If you had actually felt threatened, I think the police should be informed. At the very least, the company he works for should be told about it.

Just a suggestion, if a person comes to your house on a business matter, ask for his business card when he first arrives so you could reference it later if need be. That would actually prove that he had been to your house. It might also set the tone of his visit to make him aware that you expect him to act professionally. I have to ask whether he had an appointment or did he just show up? If you knew he was coming you could have arranged for a friend or a family member to be there with you.

It’s a shame that in today’s world, a person can’t be too careful.

No one has asked this question so I guess I will.

Did the appraisal come in low or high?  (just teasing sorry Laughing)
