New Supervisor of Elections

Chris Chambless and Deborah Ricks have both announced candidacy for the Supervisor of Elections in Clay County. Does anyone have any ideas as to who has more support?

I don't know who has the most support in the upcoming elections for the Supervisor of Election.

I know one thing Florida's officials and elections has made a name for the citizens of the State. Regardless if it's chads or delegates.

I also know Clay County has a reputation with other States as well.

Maybe one day we can clean up our government so we can at least have some respect as citizens.

I can't really answer the question posed either however I can share what I keep an eye on that gives me a starting indication and I watch it through the entire process.

Go to the Supervisor of Elections website, find the candidates and then look at their financial supporters.  Some equate the largest purse with the candidate most likely to win, hopefully that can be turned around at least in Clay County if enough people want to see a change.

It doesn't so much give me an answer on who to support, but who not to support based upon who contributes to their campaign.

Follow the money.

To answer the question - I'm going with experience, Chris you have my vote.

I agree with Marsha, if you go with who collects the most money, the county will stay corrupt. Look to see where the money is coming from, alot of times it's from outside the county.

Reply to JoeDaddys Blog - You must of fallen asleep while you were poll watching and dreamed alot of that story. Being a Clay County Poll Worker the Elections Office in Clay County is one office that has integrity.

You sound like you know one of the candidates, how about elaborating on why Chris has your vote?  Not questioning your judgement, just would like to hear why you support a particular candidate to give the rest of us some food for thought.

What experience does Chris have that makes you think he/she would be a good SOE?

Welcome to the blogs!

Neither one lights my fire. Chris was hired and trained by Barbara and she has done the best job in that office in the 35 years I have been here. Only a person who has been involed as, or with,  a candidate can really appreciate what the SOE does or does not do. I would put their ability on equal par and will judge by demeanor and attutude, and of course the support money.I am very surpriseed there isn't more candidates for this and some other offices. It says volumes for the state of politics in Clay Co

This is about your last two sentences.  Don't you think the lack of candidates has to do with the whole election process?  The mindset that whoever has the most financial support must be the best person for the job?

It's an uphill battle for anyone who doesn't have alot of money behind them because people for one reason or another don't know who all is even running till they get to the polls.

I've never lived in one place long enough to learn how to check the pulse of the local politial climate, I am a novice here.  I'm hoping that this next election cycle that the Citizens of Clay County are going to turn a few heads.  From my very limited experience I "feel" the winds of change are about to blow.

I would say that since i was born, before then and right now, we have that good ole boy system where if you've known alot of people in the county for 30 or 40 years there is an lmost gurantee of winning in any election.  Now this system isn't always bad, but i does limit the playing field.  However, in recent elections there have been several candidates with less money than their chief opponent who either won or came very close to winning.  Ex.'s C. Stewart, T. Platt (lost but won his district (1)), R. Beseler.  I would still say marsha has hit the nail on the head as far as mindset is concerned.  But one of the main reasons why people don't get involved or don't run for office is that they just don't care (not everyone) unless it affects them persoally and that is proven every single election accross the nation with voter turnout vs. the amount of eligible voters.  That's all way of the soe topic, but still in the realm.

Interesting link.  I wrote a speech in favor of the electoral college to win a trip DC several years ago with Clay Electric sponsoring the trip, however, at the time it was easier for me to write a speech in favor rather than against, but i would rather see the electoral college thrown away as it has failed four times.  Ironically each time it has failed a rep. won the election in the case of 1824, 1876, 1888 and 2000.  The electoral college was originally formed b/c the founding fathers didn't think the people to be informed enough to make logical decisions on the choice of President, however, when the popular vote was first counted in 1824, the loser John Quincy Adams won the election over Andrew Jackson after the vote was thrown to the House (nobody had a majoity of electoral votes).  Were the people heard then?  G.W. Bush who i would nominate for King technically lost the election of 2000, but won in the electoral college from a supreme court ruling, were the people heard then?  With the popular vote, there would whoever gets the most wins and there is no ceremonial electoral screw ups.  Now some will say that the electoral college is an added bonus to the poular vote and it gives the smaller states more of a voice, but today without the popular vote, there would be no electoral vote, what's the difference and why do we need two processes especially if the one that counts has failed in the past?  What say you.
