Tragedy in Nassau County

When I heard the news of the three teenagers killed in a car accident that went to Nassau High School last night the first thing I did was say a prayer for those families and then I went to hug my own kids and tell them I loved them.

The news said that the Principal announced this on the Schools Public Address System.  I'm thinking the Principal as well may have been in some sort of shock because I don't understand why he would do that.  Actually let me back up and say I can see the reasoning of not wanting rumors to fly and the importance of the truth but I was very surprised to hear that it was announced this way.   I'm an adult and would find a public announcement over a PA system about the death of a friend a little traumatizing.  Imagine those students who were friends with all three.

There's no way to imagine the pain. Tragedies like this makes me want to shut the kids up in the house to keep them safe.

I remember similar announcements when I was in high school, but usually by the time it's confirmed on the PA, we already knew via the grapevine. I'm not sure that applies in this situtation, however, since the accident was so early in the morning. What a terrible day for all involved.

I would be willing to guess that most of the students knew something of the accident when the announcement was made.  In times of stress, rumors fly, and things get totally blown out of proportion.  The truth, clear and concise, while brutal at times settles people and puts things into context.  If you have ever witnessed parents showing up in droves when a rescue unit goes to a school you know what I mean.   Parents show up and demand to know that their child or children are safe and not the reason for the commotion. An announcement has to be made, and details released.  I am certain they had a crisis intervention team plan that went into operation, and I feel certain they had additional professionals on hand to help handle the situation.

I am familiar with the road that the accident occurred on as I have relatives who live on that road.  In fact, one of my relatives worked the actual accident investigation.  It is a rural road, with long straight stretches, and hills and curves, and trees on both sides.  Because traffic is so light, people tend to travel the road at high rates of speed.  It is not the road for teens to be traveling early in the morning, especially if they aren't familiar with it.

Small towns have one of the best grapevine systems ever devised.  Everyone knows everyone, and someone called, and the telephone tree went into action. It is a sad day.
