One-year anniversary of MCS.com!

Can you believe it's been a year?

February 15th 2007 was the first official day of MyClaySun.com. It was the first day we opened this site to you guys, and the first day of the re-designed paper.

We had about 1,200 people come here that first day, and about 6,000 hits within 24 hours.

Since then, we've piled on more than 2,000,000 page views, hundreds of thousands of visitors and almost 2,000 registered users. There have been 1,580 blogs written, which, divided by 365, comes out to over 4 new blogs every single day. I would give the number of comments, but the system doesn't count those, and there's no way I could hand-count each. I'm sure we'd all agree that there are thousands and thousands.

Our very first blog was by staff writer Mary Maraghy about joining Weight Watchers. Our first non-staff blog was by AnitaSullivan, welcoming the new My Clay Sun. Our first "core group" blog was posted by the infamous Smunsey - he was wondering about "that guy standing on the intersection of Kingsley and Blanding"

His blog got several comments, and if you look closely, you'll see Lilylore's first comment, and it was just as righteously smart-alecky as ever Wink.

Looking through the user list, it looks like Marsha is our "oldest" blogger. No, no, not that kind of oldest, perhaps "most veteran" is less likely to get me in trouble. Marsha has been a registered user for just over 1 year and 1 week.

Most of our more active bloggers joined not long after that. RichK, Lilyslore, Smunsey, Whitewolf, and Jimmaxie all joined within a few days of Marsha.

The most popular blog of all time....drumroll please.....

OneMann's "It's a Cultural Thing". It racked up over 1,600 page views, and had a lot of comments (I didn't count, but there are two pages of them)

On the Spottd side, there are over 20,000 user-submitted photos in over 600 galleries. Combined with the photos we upload from events around Clay County, there is an average of 83 news photos every day.

The most popular photo gallery ever was from the OPHS 2007 Prom, and uploaded by user erinluvsmusic. It's had over 35,000 page views. The most popular image this year on Spotted was this one from the Miss Clay High pageant:

It's been viewed 806 times.

And since I pointed out our most prolific bloggers, it wouldn't be fair to leave out our most prolific Spotted photographer, Maxie Gregory.

She has uploaded 155 photo galleries and - get ready for this - 4.306 photos. In 365 days, that comes out to almost 12 photos every day, and she's single-handedly responsible for 20% of all the photos uploaded to Spotted. In fact, she's been so instrumental to the success of our photo pages that we create a special section just for her a few months ago. Thanks Maxie!

Of course, Maxie's Spotted dominance in no way detracts from the incredible photography from other people, including Lynne Musselman, Johnna Duke and Debbi Goyette, all of whom helped get Spotted off the ground.

(one of my favorite Spotted photos, courtesy of Johnna Duke)

In addition to the blogs and photos, we've even spent some time working on videos. Mary Maraghy created an amazing video from Ridgeview Elementary

Thanks to everybody here, whether this is the first blog you've ever read on MCS.com, or if this is the 10th blog you've read today. We provided the venue, and you've provided the spectacle!

So what do you guys think? What are your memories?

Jonathan, MCS' anniversary is well worth celebrating.  It has brought something new to Clay County, and providing a meeting place to exchange thought, opinion, fact and news.

I'm looking forward to offering the same congratulations and thanks on many more anniversaries.

My favorite memory of the first year was the very first time I read lilyslore's famous phrase, "Taser their testicles!"  It's hard to forget oratory like that.

This is a anniversary we all have had a big part in, the contributors, the readers, the webguys, the paper people, the advertisers.Laughing

It seems that not to long ago I saw the new MCS was coming out and they had a website. Little did I expect it to become a hobby of mine. I have always taken pics of everything we do, so to have an outlet to display them and share them with family and friends, has really meant the world to me. I really have to thank JB and the MCS people for trusting the general public. That in its self is a big leap of faith. They had no idea what kind of content or response the spotted pages would take on. The bloggers seem to monitor themselves and not to many blogs have had to be taken off.  Both sites are now like little communities of their own. I have really enjoyed being part of both.

I have learned alot of new things about photography. I also have learned a lot about how to put things on the internet.

for all you have done...

...and I second the testicles comment!!!

Jonathan,

Congratulations & thanks to you, Lamar & everyone else connected to this community treasure.  With bumps, growing pains & more, you people have stuck with us, encouraged us & in the process, made MCS blog a very positive quality of life issue.  Please stay with us.  You never know when we'll need your help or to just give one or two of us a good swift kick in the cyber pants.  JATFUR.

My calculations were off on the 1st Anniversary of MCS.  Ok, I think it's time those of us who are interested get together in real time.   I will either have a morning coffee or an evening happy hour here at my house.  No one has to give up their real identity to come, I just have to provide a list of people to security, your user name will work.  Depending on your name the Gate Guard might look at you funny but it will still work.

Any opinions on a morning get together vs evening?  Evening would provide opportunity for those who punch a time clock.

I don't care if it's 3 people, or 30.  I'm ready to meet some of the MCS Family!

Submitted by OneMann on Fri, 02/22/2008 - 4:44pm.

Marsha, I can't think of anyone more appropriate to host a meeting of bloggers.  What a great idea!

I don't care when you schedule it, tell the guards to expect me.

we will call it the first annual MCS get together!!!   Evening or Morn work for me.

Submitted by ChanelMartin on Fri, 02/22/2008 - 5:01pm.

I can't believe it's been over a year since we all came together. No doubt we've had ups and downs, but one fact stands: the blogs never cease to amaze and entertain me!

It's been quite the experience learning about Clay County and meeting the people in it -- from writing about a children's event at the mall to reporting on how the family of Austin Davis is coping and everything in between. It's been such a trip.

And what a great story a regular meeting of MCS bloggers would make! :D

Here's to 2008. I especially want to thank you, Jonathan, for all your hard work. I promise to keep pestering you for my page 2 and Pet of the Week photos in the new year. ;)

Marsha,

Evenings work for me.  I would be very interested in putting usernames and faces together..... :)

Make it a great day!

That's a great idea Maxie, Thank You!  I have to work out some details in my own head and pick a time.  I will make some decisions and post an official invitation early next week.  My biggest hurdle is that the Gate Guards may not let people through with a user name, I may have to have a name and they would want an ID with that name on it.  I won't have an open gate on something like this, my neighbors wouldn't appreciate it and I don't blame them.

This is a get together for all participating bloggers and the Staff at MCS, not a cattle call. Something like that would need to be done in public.

With that response I get images of a an Insect with a Pirates Halloween Costume.  Would you care to elaborate?

Will you grace us with your presence at a social gathering if you're available?

Hmmm! I thought it pretty funny but if I need to explain it I have not done my job.

That was the dulcet tones of a taser followed by the soothing sound of what a politician might articulate after the tasering followed by one more zap for fun.  Back to the drawing board for me.

If the timing works out, a gathering would be a lot of fun. As I mentioned before, I am back and forth to West Palm Beach for my ailing father. One of my sisters is spelling me this week. I will be back there on Tuesday the latest.

AM or PM is great.  Man, you must have a really BIG house!  I've only met one blogger in "real" time - Mike Mann.  I knew a couple others PB (Pre-Blog), but would love to meet the rest.  Great idea.  Thanks for being willing to do it.

PS - This could seperate the many-faces-of-Eve.  Smile

Marsha,

Since you snubbed my personal invitation to you to join us at Roy's house last weekend, I'll assume my invitation is "in the mail."

Karen Lake

Submitted by Marsha on Fri, 02/22/2008 - 8:40pm.

Actually I do have a really big house, but it's not fancy, just big. Everyone should feel right at home.

Mike Mann is also the only blogger I've met in "real" time but that is fixing to change.  I have come to admire and respect a great many of you for your beliefs, your integrity, and your ability to show "grace under pressure".   I can't wait to meet all of you.

Lily do you check your email at all when you are out of town?  I never got the chance to tell you how sorry I am that your Dad has had such a devastating challenge put before him but hey, if you are any sign of an inherited determination then your Dad will whip this horrid disease.  The get together won't be next week (Feb 25-29), it will be probably the first full week in March to give everyone plenty of time to make arrangements if there is a conflict they can reschedule.

It just wouldn't be right without you here Lily, I'm sure I can get several "Amens" on that one.....even from RichK

Since my email is open and you've used it before I will assume that since you have once again been insulting where there was no need once again you just enjoy hate and discontent.

My refusal of Roys invitation to come to his house was a private communication, you have chosen to make it public and I will not engage further in this immature BS.

You are included in the invitation, it would be unfair to leave you out because of my personal feelings about your conduct in these blogs at times.

This is your chance to make peace if that is what you truly desire.

Submitted by Key2life on Fri, 02/22/2008 - 9:06pm.

I would have enjoyed a response to a very respectful email which communicated my sincere desire to begin that process.

There was only silence. What do you suppose your silence communicated, Marsha?

Submitted by OneMann on Fri, 02/22/2008 - 9:12pm.

I'm so pleased with the responses, Marsha.  (Well, all except the one that seems so incredibly out of place in this celebratory blog.)

If we can go from the NFL to religion to sex to washing machines to griping about the inadequacies of the male gender within the context of a single blog, just imagine what real conversations are going to be like with this eclectric group.

Please let me know if there's anything I can do to help.

The meeting was not at your house, the invitation was not yours to extend.  I was applying that old saying about "if you cannot say anything nice don't say anything at all.  Since it was not YOUR meeting at YOUR house I felt no obligation to respond.

You are welcome to come or stay away, I am always gracious to guests in my home and you will be treated no differently.

I WILL NOT continue this childish banter with you.  Absolutely everyone else in this forum who have let their emotions or bad mood get the best of them and have said something uncalled for including me have apologized when called on it.....except you.

If you want to come, you are more then welcome and that is sincere. Other then that I have NOTHING to say to you in these blogs.  You have the poorest manners and social skills of anyone I have met in a very long time.  Come back with any ugly crap you wish to, I have nothing else to say to you unless you show up at my door where you will be greeted with a smile, a welcome and a chance to begin anew.

Mike,

I agree, this will be alot of fun, and I am looking forward to alot of laughs.  We can always toss some blog topics in a hat, let someone draw a subject and then let it begin.  Can you imagine the lack of time lapse that we're all used to?  Y'all will be surprised at me when I have no "backspace" key.Laughing

Congrats and thanks MCS you are awesome. Happy Anniversary! Jonathan you're the best!

Marsha what a lovely idea. I am certain you'll make a lovely hostess.

What a decision about coming to the party. I am not sure who I could show up as? Maybe I could be Stella, Susan, a blogger with many names. Then where in world am I going to find a son to bring without being arrested for kidnapping someone's child. Then if I didn't come I would be accused of being at a party I was not at, but some of our bloggers saw me there. Oh my decisions, decisions. Maybe I'll just be the phantom blogger there. Maybe I should just stay at home and be ANGELA. I'm always at my best being Angela! That's just way to many decisionsSmile

Thanks MCS! Happy Anniversary!

Submitted by Marsha on Fri, 02/22/2008 - 10:19pm.

Buy a white sheet, write Stella, Susan and all the other people you are on a sheet.  You might include the name "Cruella" since you are also an animal hater.  Cut only two holes, since you are so omnipotent you dont need to breathe. Buy a Ken doll, put some cuffs and a prison uniform on him and cuddle it closely.  You can stand on the front porch so we can see you through the glass doors, that way you will be there, but you won't......in all your phantomness with your jail bird son, your myriad of names yet we still won't know who you are.

Oh, and since you're the public records guru you can put a file folder on your head decorated with the MCS logo and a couple of bucks to represent what a materialistic and money hungry *** you are.

I think that will cover all the facets of just who you are according to some of the bloggers so the asinine accusations can continue.

Whatcha think?LaughingSurprisedInnocentLaughing

Jonathan excellent job on the remembrance of the first year of My Clay Sun, As many different personalities that share their own beliefs and opinions on this site I must say that the vast majority of us have remained respectful of one another. There have been some pretty intense topics and opinions expressed here. I know that in the past I have let my emotions get away from me. The one phase that sticks in my head was the first time someone wrote that, we should respectfully agree to disagree. In the past blogs, that phrase has been repeated many times, and has cooled many heals. It hasn’t been written for some time now, and some blogs show it. I don’t get to write like in the past, but I sure do read. It seems that some blogs lately are an array of accusations being thrown back and fourth with no end in site. Kind of like beating a dead horse, so; let me bring this phrase up to date. We should all respectfully agree to disagree!

Marsha I know that I haven’t been participating lately, but if the invitation is extended to me I would most graciously accept. Day or night is good for me. Jonathan just curious; how many blogs have had to be removed from this site. I count four

Happy birthday My Clay Sun It has been a good first year

You are easily recognized by many so of course you are welcome to come.  Jonathan said we have 2000 registered users and something that large is not what I had in mind at ALL, so there has to be a line somewhere and I am working my way through this as I go.

People who have not joined in any conversations on this blog past one or two comments in a year are not part of what I had in mind.  To me you fit the label of "participating blogger"

Submitted by Key2life on Fri, 02/22/2008 - 11:14pm.

Marsha,I was told I was the barrier to your participation and I took responsibility for it by engaging you and offering you the same thing you claim to offer me, a smile, a welcome and a chance to start anew at Roy's house. It doesn't matter "who's" house it was at or who offered the invitation, Marsha. That's just lame.

If you need to save face with MCS bloggers, that's fine. I'll graciously give you that. I don't feel your same compunction. I'd rather keep things real. If you sincerely want to bury the hatchet and call it even, (I'm sorry Marsha, I'm sorry Karen) send me a private email and let me know. I'll find a gold-plated ceremonial shovel and we'll move forward.

Wow - this is great!  Thanks for the opportunity to get to "know" y'all this past year. What a diverse, informative and mostly friendly group of people on this MCS blog.  I wonder what we're all like when we are communicating without a backspace key?  Smile

Jonathan - great job with the anniversary blog and the historical stats.

Marsha, your gracious invitation to open your home to the 'regular' bloggers is very generous.  Thank you for doing this.  You are a brave woman!!

Although I've not been here on this site from the beginning, I've begun to look forward reading the opinions, ideas, suggestions of several bloggers.  I've learned a lot about Clay County I didn't know; at least the new Clay County.  There have been so many changes since my family settled here in the 1950's.  Keep up the good work; I look forward to the future blogs!
