Pet Preview: Four good pets, one great cause

The following pets are a good example of how badly we need good pet parents -- and how many groups there are trying to get them there! Take a look here and talk with Clay County Animal Control, Safe Animal Shelter and CatBugs Pet Rescue -- you're sure to find a forever friend with any of them!

If you can't adopt now, please pass this on to your friends and family!

For full information, contact Clay County Animal Control, 3984 Florida 16 W., Green Cove Springs or call 904-269-6342. See more pets online at helpahomelesspet.org.

This Chihuahua boy is cute as can be, loves being held and is only a year old. Cage 14.

These pets can be found at Safe Animal Shelter, 2913 County Road 220 in Middleburg. Call 276-7233 or visit www.safeanimalshelter.com. All animals are spayed/neutered prior to adoption.

Sylvia is a big beauty, 2 years old and a little shy. She loves getting treats and being brushed. Good for single person, quiet home.

Toby is a senior dog and will need a home willing to accept and love a 10 years young dog!

This cat is available through CatBugs Pet Rescue, (904) 673-5813. Pets are fostered in private homes and examined by a vet, vaccinated and altered before adoption. E-mail June at catbugno1@comcast.net or visit www.catbugs.petfinder.com.

Miss Hobo is a sweet young girl, recently rescued by a retired couple. Very friendly, but would do well as your only cat.

I love the Chi's!  As you can tell I am a "Chi" owner.  But- I want people to understand something about the Chi's before they adopt one.  As the AKC says the temperant is: "Quick, alert, lively & very courageous"... my 2 Chi's think they are Pitbulls in a Chihuahua body!  They are very devoted to our family and have the most unique personalities.  Mine are not high-strung or "yappers" as most people think but my oldest one is more devoted to "one person".  The younger is very social. My mom has one that loves everyone she meets.

You also need to understand that a Chi can live up to 18 - 22 years.  So if you choose one as a pet you are truly making a lifetime committment.  Of course, I wouldn't trade my girls for anything.

I also have a lab who is awesome! Cool

"...My 2 Chi's think they are Pitbulls in a Chihuahua body!"
Oh boy, do I understand that! I have a runt Maltese weighing only 5 pounds at 2 years old. He thinks -- no, he knows -- he is big stuff in my household!

I did not know that Chihuahuas live up to 22 years. Talk about a great family pet! I had to put my childhood dog -- a 14-year-old Shih Tzu named Bilbo -- to sleep in August, and I thought he had an amzing life span!

Even if you have a dog, cat, rat, rabbit, bird, fish, or some disturbing hybrid from that list, it is a commitment. It may be a few months or a few decades. You hit the nail on the head: when you get a pet, "you are truly making a lifetime committment." Don't we wish everyone understood that simple concept!

Do you have photos of your babies on Spotted? I'd love to see them!

I have added some under "Spotted" and in the Pet Photo's Galleries.

I agree that no matter what type of pet you have it's a committment.  We have done the bird, hamster, fish and dogs.  My mother-in-law gave myself and her 2 daughters 5 koi out of her fish pond one time... all theirs died and all of mine but 1 died.... it lived for over 5 years!  It just died last month...it was so big I had to use both hands to take it out of the tank. It was huge! Needless to say it didn't go "down the pipes" to fish heaven like most of them do...it would have clogged it up! Sealed
