Portables/ Tornado DrillMy children attend the Oakleaf school which has a lot of portables. In fact, a lot of schools here in Clay county are using portables. They recently participated in a tornado drill in school which is great. What is NOT so great is that during the drill they went to the main building. I really do not think many of us are thinking about how unsafe portables are in the event of a tornado. Does the school board really think our kids ( running out of 20+ portables) are all going to be able to reach the main building before a fast moving twister hits? Let alone that our children would have to be exposed leaving the portable to get to the main building.. What if they were outside on the way to the building when a twister hits?
I know the portables are "temporary" supposedly.. but many existing schools have had them for years now. Rather than build onto existing schools they use these. Portables are basically mobile homes and we all know what happens to mobile homes in a tornado.. Our children are in death traps in the event of a tornado and it just does not sit well with me. I know funding is an issue for our schools and that is why we use them, but I really dont think the savings is worth the potential cost of life if a tornado were to hit. I don't think that the school board is concerned with funding. I would be willing to bet that the tax payers of Clay County would be surprised to know that the cost of these new aluminum style portables cost $52,000 apiece. I challenge citizens to go and count the amount of portable buildings that at these brand new schools like Oakleaf and Coppergate have on the school grounds. These portable buildings are an eyesore in my opinion, not to mention the safety issue. I think that the money spent on these "temporary" buildings that are really permanent fixtures at our schools could be spent on buildings that are bulit on a slab of concrete using conventional consturction techniques just like the main buildings.
