Procedures on MyClaySun.com

Good morning, all-

We have spent a considerable amount of time discussing how things are progressing here on MyClaySun.com, and I want to let you know what we have decided.

There seem to be two main issues interrupting the normally constructive tone. One is the issue of one person with multiple screen names, and the other is users who have joined the site and aired their grievances without otherwise contributing in a positive manner.

This is how we will begin to approach these issues. One person with multiple screen names on MyClaySun.com is not prohibited by the terms of service. However, you are required to enter and maintain accurate personal information when you create a screen name, and starting today, we will be monitoring the accounts of users on the site whom we feel might have violated the following portion of the Terms of Service:

"You must provide and maintain accurate personal information in your account record."

We believe this will solve two problems. One is the tendency for people to create false accounts using false information and using the blogs as a sounding board for personal vendettas. And since each screen name requires accurate and unique information, enforcing this term should hinder the tendency to create multiple accounts.

We believe the strength of MyClaySun.com is in it's ability to bring residents together, and to provide a safe and constructive venue for discussion.

If you find it necessary to change your personal information, you can click "Edit profile" in the top menu. Once there, click "Personal contact information" to update your information. Once finished, click "Submit" at the bottom of the page to make those changes permanent. E-mail me at jonathan.bennett@jacksonville.com for further help with changing your personal information. We will not share your personal information with anybody else. There is also this tutorial.

We will give everybody several days to make sure their information is correct before we take further action.

Also, I have removed the blog "Clay Co BBC forgets it's own personnel policies" because it blatantly violated the terms of service. Removing content from MyClaySun.com is always difficult, because the line between harassment and poignant criticism often depends on which side of the issue you agree. However, that Clay Co BBC blog degraded into personal name calling, which will always lead to removal.

With all of that said, the vast majority of users and blogs are constructive and exactly of the sort we like to see. Thanks to all of you who have helped make MyClaySun.com the truly interactive site it is and I hope this begins to solve the problem.

Please comment on this blog and consider it an open Q&A. You ask me questions about the site (I'm pretty good at world history, too), and I'll do my best to answer.

Jonathan, I had not looked forward to the day when MCS would have to start policing this incredible forum it has provided the citizens of Clay County.  It is what you had hoped it would be - a place where diverse folks can come to discuss, or just read about, whatever pops into our little bloggin' brains.

I am, however, extremely pleased with the action you've chosen in an effort to make it an adult forum, where adult behavior is expected.  That's not censorship, just common sense and good taste.  Thanks for taking action, but not going overboard.

Jonathan,

My vote goes with Mike.  I'm sorry to hear these steps must be taken but in the end, I think we'll all find out it will be the greater good for the greater # of people.

I hope that we can chalk this up to growing pains & a few people failing to excercise their right to be civil.  Maybe Marsha could write a pamphlet or something & then post it on the blog & service agreement.  I don't think I'm alone in saying she is one of the best examples of civility in our group.

I hope you have success in the area of multiple user names.  I've had experience in this but not because of my foellow bloggers.  They have been friendly & gracious, especially after I came out.

Once again, thanks for all of your help & good luck in this new phase of operation.

Oh, crap!  I thought you were talking about another kind of vote.  You're such a tease!  Oh well, this vote's important too if we want to keep our blog site from getting bogged down.

I am signed up as a different person on  mystjohnsun.com cause I didn't think it would let me be the same as mcs. You know that I haven't any devious intentions for doing this but what about if someone was to be mean spirited.  Doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out who maxiejim is! Oh and happy 1 year anniversary MCS I think it was about this time last year that I started sending pics to this wonderful forum....

And the winner is .....  drum roll please ..... buyonit.com. What a world class idea. Post an advertisement on the site 1 blog above the one from the blog site that reiterates the terms of use that say you can't advertise for free on the blog site. What a maroon. I'm sure to do business with them in the near future. NOT!

You were certainly quick on that one Jonathan.

You guys hit the nail(s) on the head.

Great site.  Lots of great info here, and an interesting experience.  Mike said it perfect - an appropriate response to the nuisances.

finder - maroon? - a burgundy moron? Smile

MCS - I know ads are a business reality, but I've yet to read one.  But, I'm the guy who changes the channel as soon as a commercial comes on - drives my wife crazy.

Great response to the growing pains of the site, Jonathon.

How will users know when they cross the line? Will you be sending reminders of the Terms of Use to those who are not honoring their promise here?

(Sorry, it's the reporter in me. I have to ask a follow-up question. It's second nature.)

Bax;

Just showing my age. It's a line from an 'old time' cartoon. Bugs Bunny and Yosemite Sam if I remember correctly.

An early attempt at PC I guess. That way you didn't insult anyone by calling them a moron.

Thanks, everybody, for the kind e-mails, phone calls and comments to this blog.

To answer your questions:

Maxie - Each Sun site is essentially it's own site. If you create a name on MyStJohnsSun.com, your account info is entirely different from MCS.com. Don't worry, I won't be coming after you Cool

Mike - Haha, yes, having an advertisement blog posted immediately after my own reminding people of the rules was incredibly ironic.

Karen - For now, we will only be in contact with those users who do not have accurate personal info in their account.

Jonathan I think you have come up with a good plan of action. But, you must admit since MCS has been online our fellow bloggers have done a pretty good job of policing this site. For the most part everyone has remained civil to one another. If I remember right there has only been four blogs that had to be removed. That’s not bad for the first year of service.

Jonathan speaking of the first year, what is the anniversary date of  MCS?  ? I think it would be pretty cool that on that date you would post the first ten blogs that were written. I wonder what the first topic was and who wrote it, along with the other nine blogs.

Now about duel screen name I do use one, but only for topics that are of a nature that I don’t want people to know that this is the opinion of winn1955. I do it for mine and my family’s safety. The reason is that as everyone says, I came out with my identity.

There are some topics that make me feel vulnerable when I give my opinion. I have never used it to supplement or bolster one of my blogs, nor have I used a different name to attack a fellow blogger. I use one because it makes me feel safer with some topics.

And I gave no false information on my registration. I don’t get the opportunity participate like I used to and I sure miss it, and you guys, its just that my fingerers don’t work the way they used to. I do try and read as much as I can though. What say you guys about the first ten??
