Computer Repairs

I guess this could be put under education. A learning experience.

I took my computer to a repair shop, it had crashed.

I was told that the motherboard was bad. I was planning on upgrading the unit anyway. I told the repair facility to install a new motherboard and upgrade the memory.

I got it back and ran it. There was no "d" partition just the "c" drive. All the window and money programs that came with the computer were gone. I ask the tech why he erased the drive. He said that they do that just incase there was a virius on it. And most of you know that you do not get a disk with all the programs on it when you buy a computer although you pay for the programs in the price of the computer.

The back of the case was cut out to allow the new motherboard to have the cable slots. I almost cut myself on a sharp edge when I was installing one of the cables.

I could not run some of the game programs even with the upgraded 512 memory. I took it back to the shop and explained the problem. I was told that the video card was going bad. I also asked him about the sharp edge could he clean it up? He said not without taking the whole thing apart again.

I asked to talk to the owner and he said I could not because he does not talk to anybody and was not available and I could not get his phone number.

Having enough of this i left.

I bought a new video card and called my son, who builds and repairs computers on the side. I told him to get over here and fix this computer. ( In case you are wondering why I didn't take it to him in the first place, It would have taken him a month or so to get it done, lol)

So he comes over and check out the computer and video card. Nothing wrong with the video card it  just needed a faster video card. After he installed the new video card and tweeked the computer I asked him why the tech told me he could not save the "d" drive and reinstall it on the drive after he installed the new motherboard. He told me that It could be done but that the tech was just lazy. He said that all that was really needed to be done was to run some anti virus programs on the system.

I decided to upgrade to a 1GB memory. That is when I found out the motherboard was an old model, and the memory costs twice as much as other memorys (Best Buy prices)

So I guess the point of this story is just to buy a new computer. I hated to do that because I do not like Vista, I have a new laptop that has Vista on it, and wanted to  keep my XP system.

I do have another desk top that has the money program on it so I did not loose my financial records. I usually keep 3 backups of critical information on different usb drives and disks.

In case your wondering what computer shop I took it to. It is on the corner near the Walmart on Blanding across from Walgreens.

Those who give up freedom for security have neither.
