In case you missed it - Voter ID cards - Why are Dems against?

For my liberal friends, and those who claim to be independent, heck - even for my conservative friends.

Why in the world would the Democrats be against requiring ID cards for voting?  Okay, hypothetical question.  We know why they are against it - so those in this country as 'guests' can vote.  I just can't imagine how in good conscience the Dems can actually stand up and say they are against requiring photo IDs for voting...

Thoughts?

Here are the first few sentences of the story.

DEAD PEOPLE VOTING

Few things make more sense than requiring people to show photo identification before voting.

How else are states going to make certain people don't vote more than once?

Yet, the Supreme Court has been asked to declare a law in Indiana unconstitutional.

The plaintiffs, according to The Associated Press, see the voter ID rules as a poll tax aimed at keeping likely Democrats from voting.

CCC,

Good timing on this one.  It was either yesterday or the day before, I was listening to a discussion on this subject.  I don't know all the details in depth, but this is my understanding.  Requiring VID's for the purpose of preventing vote fraud is basically bogus.  The person who put forth this statement had good reasons.  People, mostly kids, get phony ID's for booze, butts & maybe some porn.  Considering the low voting turn out in the past, it seems that voting is a fairly low priority.  Makes sense to me.

Requiring VID's would cause a hardship for the poor, some minority groups & those who might live in rural areas.  I can agree with that, but only up to a point.  If the government wants to require VID's & some groups claim a hardship, put the facility on or near where these people must go on a regular basis anyway.  The gas station, grocery store & here's a good one, any place that sells money orders.  I'm not saying this is the be all end all solution, but it might be a start.

As to the political finger pointing, it's like most rhetoric.  There is some fact on both sides, but not enough for me to get my knickers in a knot.  I have my priorities, like doing the laundry & counting my socks.

I see some good & bad points with VID's.  I keep liking the idea of having one, just one, official ID that can be used on a city, county, state, federal & international level.  Something like a passport, gee whiz.  It will be interesting to see the reactions to this.  Have a great one.

I'm all for VIDs. Can you say 23 years in SD CA, sometimes called North Mexico.

As to being a hardship to get one of these IDs, the IRS didn't worry about that when it came time to require a SS card for children. People figured it out.

I'd add one more place to the list of places that are visited on a regular basis. The welfare offices. Oops, that was way politically incorrect.

Finder,

Another opportunity for me to say, "Gee, I wish I thought of that."  Good one, PC or not.

Forty or 50 years ago, things like Voter ID requirements were used to keep large portions of society from exercising their right to vote.  But haven't we grown some since then, and hasn't the rest of the world changed considerably since then, too?

I will always argue against anything used to disenfranchise anyone, especially by class, race or other discriminatory factor.  But in today's world, acquiring a legal ID is rarely difficult.  Certainly not difficult enough to claim it stops anyone from voting.

Presenting a picture ID should be one of the responsibilities of citizenship, something required before exercising the right to cast a ballot.

The reason why dems are against it because the dems need all the votes they can get. Most illegals vote Dem becasue the Dems give them everything for free.....hence part of the problems with the US today.
