Finish this sentence: Christmas is....
So how does the Christmas season make you feel? Of course, if you just got back from sitting on Blanding and 295, you might be wildly jaded, but even so, let us know! Just post a comment finishing the sentence. I'll get started... A nice idea. A time for reflecting. A time to enjoy family & friends. A time to rekindle the idea of peace. I hope it works. RichK

Smuncey, Please forgive a question or two from a very confused agnostic. As concerns the birth of Jesus, according to your Christian gospels, exactly which gospel is it to which you refer. Luke & John don't even bother to mention this event. Curious. Mathew & Luke seem to be at odds as to where it actually took place, Bethlehem or Nazareth. More curious. According to many scholars. The date is wrong. The month is wrong. The season is wrong. The month is wrong. So who decides? And why must they decide as if they were forced to make a choice among various possibilities? If it is so important, shouldn't some one, any one know the facts? As pertains to this subject, no less a religious leader as the Archbishop of Canterbury said that the story of the nativity is nothing more than a nice "legend." Perhaps, with your obvious knowlege of the subject, you can clear this up for some one like me. RichK

Jimmaxie, As John Mclain said in one of the "Die Hard," movies, I'm just looking for just the facts. Surely that can't be that much of a hardship with all of the proclamations, etc. RichK

Uncle R/Solo I would definitely have to agree with you that the facts and the real event of the nativity seem to disagree. Shepards would not have been tending their flocks outside in December. You are correct in mentioning that not all the gospels mention the birth of Christ. If you assume it is only a legend, what a legend. Let's suppose only 1/10 of the legend is true. If a single healing was true, is that not a miracle? If a single parable is true, what a teacher. If a single event happened what a wonder. We know how the spoken word is enhanced with each teller of the story. But, with such a story, there must be some real fire for all that smoke to have made it 2000 years into the future. I think everyone, even agnostics will admit that something happened 2000+ years ago. For a "legend" to survive that long, there has to be some truth in it. How much truth there is dependent on the individual. That is the nature of "free will." That happens to be one of the gifts of our creator. I may not agree with you, but I do stand up for your right to believe as you do, because I am a believer in true free will. We are responsible for our actions which are the result of that free will.

makes me feel rejoiceful for the birth of a newborn child who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, and born of the Virgin Mary to save me from myself. It matters not when He was born, or where He was born; I'm just thankful to know Him and to know that He loves me and all of us. Merry Christmas.

. . . family, food (my wife's baking Christmas cookies with the oldest grandson), celebrating with gifts, reading from the Bible and saying a prayer before we open the gifts, parades on TV, feeling bad for people who have to work (ugh), looking forward to the New Year. A VERY Merry Christmas to you all. Rich - just once, let it go. It's called CHRISTmas for a reason. If you don't want to participate in the party, don't. I'm as free-willed, free-thinking, etc. as the next baby-boomer, but during Christmas, I enjoy thinking about the person who was Jesus, or who was the inspiration for the "legend" Jesus. No matter how freely one thinks, the basic message of Jesus Christ - love and forgive - is a message worth celebrating. Peace On Earth & Goodwill Towards All People - it's Christmas afterall. HO!HO! HO! - Rich, please don't tell me there's no Santa. Submitted by SoloVoce on Fri, 12/21/2007 - 6:49am.
Bax, As usual, you have some good, common sense advise about letting it go. It would be even better if it were applied equally. Unfortunately, the assaults come from every sector. And if people are put off by my curiosity, I would caution them when they read the TU this morning, especially the religion page, a day after my reply. As to Santa Claus. I'm no expert on the subject, but I have a Claus character in my life. My Claus is a woman (equal opportunity & all that) whom I've been involved with for 40 years. she's not fat, doesn't wear a red outfit & couldn't find a reindeer to save her life. But the fringe benefits are out of this world. As I said once before, I hope all my fellow bloggers have a Merry Christmas, a happy New year & above all, a safe & peaceful holiday season. JATFUR. All my family at home and not overseas... but if they were, or I still had the chance to be, I would be proud! Proud to be defending folks like RK who speak their mind, no matter how little. Hang in there RK - Christmas only comes once a year! God blesses ya' all year!

CCC, Actually, I feel blessed pretty much all year. There times though....Like watching the CUBS or BEARS keep blowing a game. Except for the commecialization & all that goes with it, pressure, traffic, etc., I pretty much like the season also. Not to worry, I've become somewhat of an expert at hanging in. Hope you have a Merry Christmas, & Happy New Year laced with plenty of fun & safe living. JATFUR. RichK Submitted by SoloVoce on Mon, 12/24/2007 - 5:42pm.
jimmaxie, I've re read the request. If I'm not mistaken, & I don't think I am, I have replied within the request of the question. Jaded? Yes. But also realistic to the point of not being confused or taken in by myths or unfounded stories. JATFUR. RichK
