I Gave My Gun A Chance! By winn1955 - Wed, 05/02/2007 - 7:33pm  I found this in the archives and thought it was worth a reprint, plus I enjoyed reading it. Ghostwrter

I gave my gun a chance!

I gave my gun a chance too kill me!  I have heard from so many in the media that we have got to get rid of our guns, because they kill people. I have many guns and I have had them for a long time. I had no idea that my guns would kill me. I believe that I have been rather nice to them. I have always taken care of them; I keep them clean and well oiled. I feed them bullets as needed. I even keep them locked up to keep them safe.

So, I had to ask myself, why would my guns want to kill me, did I do something wrong to them? I don’t think so. I couldn’t quit thinking about it. I would lie in bed at night with my guns above my head and wonder if tonight would be the night that my guns would shoot me.  I had to get to the bottom of this. I had to find out if my guns were going to kill me once and for all! So, I devised a plan.

I went to my gun locker and I took out the biggest and badest gun I own. His name is Pete, Pistil Pete. His parents are Smith & Wesson of the 357magnum breed. I have never had a problem with Pete before, but I had to be sure he didn’t want to hurt me. I picked him up carefully and laid him on the table. I set there for awhile and just starred at Pete and nothing happened. Pete looked as content as he always did. I got to thinking; maybe he is trying to trick me.

I had an idea, what if I would make Pete mad? What if I really ticked him off? Would that expedite my guns plan to take my life, I had to find out. So, I did something that I had never done before. I picked up a hand full of dirt and I rubbed it all over his barrel. I knew he wouldn’t like that, dirt and oil would have to make him terribly uncomfortable. I sat and watched for his reaction, Nothing! He just sat there and snubbed his barrel at me. It was like he just didn’t care. I had to do something to make him mad enough to want to kill me. I had to find out!

I picked Pete up and took him outside. While on my way I pushed some dirt down his barrel just to rub it in. I couldn’t believe it there was still no response. I was starting to get frustrated. I knew Pete had to be getting upset; I had never treated him like that before. Pete just laid there in my hands as if he didn’t have a care in the world. I turned him around and looked down his barrel and ask him. I said, Pete if you are planning to kill me the least you can do is shoot me while I am looking down your barrel. Pete Just ignored me. He didn’t say or do anything the silence was deafening.

I started to get very upset at him and started to curse him and still nothing. No response at all from Pete. Ohh! How dare he ignore me like that after everything that I have done for him, and he shuns me! I’ll teach him a lesson he won’t forget. I picked Pete up over my head as far as I could and through him on the pavement as hard as I could. I knew as soon as he hit the ground and gained his senses he would surely shoot me then. So I did a barrel roll out of his way so he would miss me. As I stood up and looked at Pete I couldn’t believe my eyes. Pete Just laid there as if nothing happened. I was enraged at him. I ran back into my house too the gun locker and I grabbed Jr. from the shelf. I ran back to Pete and shot him before he had a chance to shoot me.

As the smoke cleared I realized Pete was dead. I looked in my hands and I saw Jr. I looked at Jr. and screamed OHH!!! My God you shot Pete. Jr. was silent for a few seconds and then said slowly, No I didn’t, you did!! YOU pointed me at him and YOU pulled my trigger. I was content on my shelf until you picked me up and used me!

Amendment II

A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.

What part of shal not be infringed do we not understand?  How ignorant can we be?

Every gun law passed every no gun zone designated only hurts the law abiding citizen!  Criminal dont obey laws.  They have their guns/weapons no matter what law is passed.  Only law abiding citizens are affected when a gun law is passed.  And on top of that, every gun law passed infringes on our 2nd Amendment right. The Bill of Rights is our concealed weapons permit.  Support the NRA today and make it a great day.....

Ghostwriter; I’m glad you enjoyed the read, and thought it was worth a reprint. I had forgotten all about that little story I wrote. What made you go through the archives too look for it? Just curious with out going back to look, if my memory serves me not very many responded to the piece.

The reason that I wrote it is, I get so tired of hearing that in order to curb crime; we must enact new and tougher gun laws to get guns off of the street. I just don’t get it, I could be wrong on the time frame, but I think gun laws started to be enacted around the time of prohibition. So for close to eighty years we have been placing restrictions on the use and sale of guns, with out many positive results that curbs crime. I have to say many and not any, because one might be out there that RK will pick up on.:)  Any way the point being that gun laws don’t work. I mean what new gun laws could be enacted that would truly drop the crime rate. It seems that everything has been tried.

The truth is; and it has been repeated many, many times that gun laws only affect the honest citizen, and not the criminal. Let’s face the facts, after eighty rears of trying wouldn’t you think that some smart educated politician would have thought of a law that would take the weapons away from the criminals, and crime would be reduced? Please; all I ask for is one, just show me one gun law that has reduced the crime rate. It’s kind of like the $70 billon dollar war on drugs; they are both failed policies that we keep trying too make work with out any positive results. In other word it is the definition of insanity.

Let me tell you a true story, this actually happened in Jacksonville. On occasion my sons come a crossed a house rehab that my entire family can work on. That would be three long haired country boys, my wife, and my grandson. The location north side off of Moncrief, We started the project, the first day we were there I was working outside when a man from next door approached me. He said he come over to warn me too watch out and to expect trouble. My question to him was what kind of trouble I should expect. The man looked at me and said; some of these young punk kids around don’t like your kind around, if you know what I mean. The man seemed truly concerned for our safety; I looked at him, thank him and told him that I considered myself warned. I went inside too talk to my sons about it.

On the same day just a few hours later another neighbor knocked on the door, my son went to the door and the woman at the door said I just came by to warn you guy’s that there could be trouble from some that live around here. We talked for a few and went back too work, but this time with considerable more attention to our surroundings. I took note of what was going on around the neighborhood, and sure enough we were being watched by what appeared to be the thugs that lived around the neighborhood.

At this point we certainly did not feel at ease, at all! My son’s and I figured it was time to get the woman and children out of harms way. As we were packing up our tools and equipment, an old man was walking down the side walk he stopped and said to me and my son that we had better watch our backs around here. That was three warning in less than three hours. It was getting near dusk and we decided too make like sheep and get the flock out of there, and we did. As we were leaving you could feel the eyes watching, and the tension in the air.

So; here is our situation, we have a complete house to rehab in a part of town that can obviously get us killed, and we couldn’t walk away from the work. we needed the money. If we would have went too the cops and told them that they were watching us we would have been laughed out of the precinct. We had too go back too work the next day, and we did, but this time we went back armed,  what I mean is we were packing, in plain site of everyone around. I had a 38 strapped to my belt, and my other son’s both had a 357magnum on their belts, the reason; we didn’t have a concealed weapons permit, but we have a right to carry them in the open. And that is exactly what we did, and I mean that we made it very plain that they were visible for all to see. And it was blatantly obvious that the punks saw them. Your dammed right they were sizing us up, but you know what; they also knew that the three of us had one another’s back and it wouldn’t be worth the risk for them to F@#* around with us. Now do I know for a fact that the guns we had made the difference?  No I don’t; and there is no way to know for sure. But what I can tell you is that we had absolutely no problems with the thugs, and we made friends with the neighbors. We packed everyday we worked and had absolutely no problems.

I am not a criminal and I have the right to protect my family, or anyone else in a life threatening situation. Clay the opinions that you have on firearms are yours and your feeling are real and yours and I would never consider trying to change your mind, but you can rest assured that if I would ever see you or anyone else’s life being threatened I would not hesitate for a second to pull the trigger to  protect your life or anyone else.

Winn,

You hit the problem on the nose.  I'm not sure of your time line either, but I'll bet you're close.  You also stated the very obvious which has been said so many times before.  Any gun law will affect the legal gun owner, not the criminal.  If they want a gun, they will find a way to get one.  It's really as simple as that.

Oh, smuncey, by the by.  You apparently fell into that old logical trap.  We come across it every day.  A person will pick & choose only what might, & it's a big might, support his argument.  Unfortunately, some people hear or see only what they want.  Whether they do this on purpose, hoping no one will notice, or perhaps they lack some skill in comprehension &/or critical reasoning, it does nothing to further the information gathering process.

In case you still don't know what I'm talking @, here's a clue.  What part of, "A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state," do we not understand?  How ignorant can we be?  See how simple that was?  See how wrong that was?  We all know you're a bright lad & probably just got confused.  Not to worry.  We all stumble now & then.  JATFUR.

Winn I went back through the archives, because of the crime rate in the city of Jax. I was reading the blog on surveys and some how it went from that too carrying a concealed weapon. I don’t understand how it went there, but that’s beside the point. It got me thinking about how Jax is trying to stop the murdering, and the futile attempts they have tried so far to accomplish that. Let’s see they have tried, Prayer, community support groups, asking people to snitch, putting more cops on the street and Oh lets not forget about the gun by back program. What a waste of money that was.

I remembered back in the summer that somebody wrote about guns don’t kill people, people do and I found the story that you wrote about how you gave your gun a chance to kill you. It made me chuckle so I figured others would like to read the story. That’s why I put it back on the cover

As far as your opinion on gun law I couldn’t’ agree more it truly is the definition of insanity. One problem that I see with todays society is that we no longer act on any given situation to solve a problem we react to it. By reacting to it we satisfy our immediate response and shock that we have but we don’t solve the problem.

An example would be Zero tolerance. If a kid threw a rock at a teacher he would be charged assault with a deadly missile as he should be. Now if a kid picks up a crayon and threw it at the teacher he get the same punishment. That just plain ridiculous. Then  you have hate crimes, drug laws and the list go on. Zero tolerance just don’t make since.

Many of thease problem could be solved starting with discipline in the home, and school. The golden rule should taught. Moral values instilled in our children at an early age. We don’t have any of that taught today and it shows. Kids today have no respect for adults, but they demand respect from others.

When a 14 yr. old boy can kill his step dad with a shot gun for a verbal reprimand about how he needs to respect adults. I would say that we have a real problem in this country based at the very core of our society.

I went Christmas shopping today.

I don't care much for shopping in the first place.

Crowds.

Traffic.

Rude people.

Road rage.

I opted for gun control.

I left my gun at home.

There are a hell of a lot of people who are alive right now & will get to celebrate Christmas & be thankful for my gun control.  JATFUR.

Rich,

Next time you go Christmas Shopping and gunfire breaks out in your local department store, look for the following sign....

GUN FREE ZONE

In case of emergency call 911 and crawl to nearest exit.  If help is delayed in arriving, kiss  your defenseless butt good-bye!

Merry Christmas!!!!

I hop online and whip out my Visa. I can shop anywhere in the world. I don't have to worry about the gangster wannabe stealing my stuff out of my car. I even shopped Walmart.com this year and had the stuff delivered to my door and walmart super is 4 miles from my house. I think I am becoming Agoraphobic and paranoid about going out anywhere. I like your idea but sometimes it just isn't enough. I think the concealed weapons permit and a gun at home is always a better idea.

Who cares why this intruder was in his house. The fact that he was in there and not invited is the only thing that matters. He walked in but he didn't walk out.

Rk If it is so obvious that the gun laws only affect the honest citizens then I would have to conclude that we have a bunch of ignorant politicians as policy makers. Oh! Wait let me retract that statement, they couldn’t possibly be ignorant. That would mean that they are without knowledge of the situation. Lets just say that they are a bunch of pudding heads, in other words stupid is as stupid does.

Ghostwriter I have to agree with your view on reaction verses action. Your so right, when ever there is some type of a tragedy that happens we can always count on our fearless leaders to enact some type of dumb assed feel good law that satisfies their constituents, instead of sitting down and writing a law that would actually solve the problem. It boggles my mind that they can’t see the facts on gun control.

You are not going too be able to control guns in a country that has the right to bare arms. If more people would carry you would see a drop in the murder rate in Jax.. The way it is now, you are the pray, and they are the predator.  If some honest citizens would start blowing some of these thugs away, and the news would start putting it in print, you would see a change.

Winn,

I agree with you that what we have now is in no way sufficient, in spite of all the good intentions.  The most logical thing, in my opinion, would be to make a study on the subject of the top ten industrialised nations & look for parallels & possible solutions.  I think that may have already be done.

There are some things that are just too embedded in our national conscience & culture that logic & common sense have been fighting & loosing.  Our dependence on oil, the car culture & the gun mentality which is backed by a large, organised & well funded lobby.

Look at it this way, if you will.  Much of this started with the need to fend off attacking Native Americans trying to get back the land stolen from them, fighting off the British when we declared independence & the need to obtain food.  I'm not sure how it metastasized into the unholy national problem we now have, but I feel confident in saying that we won't see any appreciable progress in our lifetime.  A truly sorry state of affairs because if the status of this problem keeps growing, some one, some where, is going to declare martial law.  Then the hammer comes down.  Damn, I hope I'm wrong.  But there are siilar situations in history, I'm sure.

Re: Your last paragraph.  I can only agree with the fist part, not the last.  That would probably give us more problems & we have enough now.  On the first part, I would say that like many, you are paying attention only to the last part of the sentance, not the first.  There is one more thing to consider.  When quill was put to velum back in the later part of the 18th century, The people who signed the documents bestowed those rights unto thmselves & to those who would follow.  No one else gave them the rights.  The proof is on the velum for all to see.

Under the right circumstances, & I mean legal circumstances, any right can be introduced, modified or rescinded.  Food for thought.  JATFUR.
