Good showing for Keystone Heights at Homecoming

The Keystone Heights Indians(4-2,6-2 District 3-2A) played their final home game of the season tonight. Following the win over the Yulee Hornets(1-5,1-7 District 3-2A) 35-0, there was some excitement in the air. The victory was bitter sweet for players such as Greg Taylor, Matt Story, Keegan Lowery, Joel Morgan and other seniors who played their final game in Keystone. When asked about playing his last game at home Taylor replied, “I am going to miss the fans, I will miss playing here on this field but most of all I miss my teammates”.

The Indians did not disappoint their home fans. The offense came out with something to prove. They took the opening kick off and drove fifty seven yards in five plays. Taylor and Story shared the work load. Story finished the opening series with twelve yards on two carries and Taylor finished with forty five yards and a touchdown on three carries.

Defensively the Indians were led by Lowery and Morgan, who combined for six tackles in the first twelve plays. Lowery had a sack for a six yard loss on the Hornets third play from scrimmage. The defense would continue to harass the Hornets ever time they would attempt a pass. The Hornets signal caller, Antario Rainey would finish the night two of five for twenty five yards. Unfortunately for the Hornets running backs their night was unproductive as well. Senior backs Dewayne Peterson and Brett Davis finished the night with a combined twenty five carries for fifty eight yards. The Indians defense would only surrender one hundred and sixteen yards.

For the Indians running game the story would be different. Taylor would finish the night with one hundred forty four yards on seventeen carries and three touchdowns, and Story would gain ninety nine yards and one touchdown on thirteen rushes. The Indians would finish the night with two hundred sixty three total yards rushing.

The task at hand for Indians quarterback Clayton Mosley was to hand the ball off to the work horses in the backfield. Mosley finished the night zero for zero. His most productive play, which did not consist of handing the ball off, came in the second quarter. Mosley fumbled the snap, picked it up and ran thirteen yards for a first down.

The defense got in the scoring act as well. Late in the fourth quarter senior Jacob Elliot scooped up a fumble and sprinted sixty three yards for the final touchdown of the evening.

The Indians are still in the playoff hunt. Unfortunately they are now dependant on Yulee to defeat Fernandina Beach to get in. The Pirates have the tie breaker over the Indians and they too won their game this evening. The Indians must win their two remaining games on the road, at Bradford and at Inverness Citrus, to keep their playoff hopes alive.
