A music lover's movie: "Once"
I recently read a review for the movie “Once” in the newspaper’s and was anxiously waiting for it to start in Orange Park. Sorry to say, that this movie is only showing at the Regency AMC Theater and I am sure it will only be there a short time. I traveled there this past Saturday specifically to see this movie. “Once” glorifies the singer-songwriter and is a wonderful musical without throwing the music in your face. It is about an Irish street musician (vacuum cleaner repairman) who meets up with a piano loving Czech girl on the street and they create a wonderful music experience. There is a subplot about their previous love-life and their growing affection for each other but it is second to the feeling of the music and it’s meaning in their life. There are wonderful jam sessions with other street performers and you can just sink deeper into your seat and let the music move you. I actually found myself tapping my feet in the theater. The movie reviewers have given this movie an excellent rating. Warning, it is not my mom’s kind of movie but for those that truly love music. It definitely deserves a bigger opening than this one theater. Related: ClayCounty's blog | login or register to post comments | printer friendly version | Tags: Entertainment

I just want to bring this wonderful Irish movie to everyone's attention again. I saw a feature on the star/musician on the Today Show and I understand he was first hired as the musician only and when the actor backed out he took on that role also. There was a great human interest story on Today about how it touched a Chicago woman's heart. Anyway, I did a google search and I just read that it won the World Audience Cinema Award at the Sundance Film Festival and then proceeded to turn-over €10 million at the North American box office. It has also been nominated for Best Compilation Soundtrack Album in a Motion Picture while one of its songs, Falling Slowly, was nominated in the Best Song category. It has difficult competition as it will compete with Hairspray and Dream Girls.
I understand it is now out on DVD and I'm going to try find it and purchase it.
