MTV and Britney Spears rated Unwatchable

I could not bear to watch the MTV Music Awards Show in its entirety last night but did catch a significant amount of it.  The first train wreck was the performance of Britney Spears.  Performing her new single “Gimme More” she lip-synched to the track, sometimes, and looked nervous and spaced-out.  I knew she couldn’t sing and that she lip-synched to her previous songs but the girl did know how to dance.  Because of her dance moves in her earlier years, I could understand why the pre-teens and teenager’s loved her.  In the performance last night, she stumbled through it, looked like she was counting the steps and couldn’t remember half of them.  At one point, she seems so bored that she stopped even moving her lips and appeared not to even know the words to her own song.   Many are reporting about her physical appearance but I want even go there as I don’t expect all celebrities to have an emancipated look.  However, I will say she could have worn something different than her bra and panties.  What was to have been a musical comeback for Britney, seems to be dead with this performance.  However, she may remain a paparazzi show like Paris Hilton.

To make things worse for Britney, the distasteful comedian Sarah Silverman took the stage immediately following her and Britney and her children appeared to be the brunt of her jokes.  Silverman called the children adorable mistakes and went on to state unprintable remarks.  When did anyone’s children get to be appropriate material for jokes?

The awards show itself, was unorganized, with no host melding the performance together, and appeared to be a drinking brawl thrown together in different party suites at the Palms Casino in Las Vegas. There were “parties” going on by Kanye West, Foo Fighters, Fall Out Boy and Justin Timberlake.  It really doesn’t make any difference who won the newly made up awards, as between the swearing and drinking, no one seemed to care.

I understand that last year the MTV awards show had its smallest audience in 10 years and I expect that this year’s will be much higher as everyone wanted to see Britney.  However, I think this year’s show has left a sour taste in many people’s mouth and I would just rate it unwatchable.

I don't watch MTV or any awards show.  The only time I've see Britney Spears was on the news, as I did on the noon news today.  I'm glad I haven't wasted my time.  If this is what passes for talent today, it doesn't say much for the people who pay good money keeping her in front of a camera or on the shelves in music stores.

Pretty girl.  Nice body.  Talent?  No signs of that found.

In the beginning of MTV, it was a great place to catch a group that you might be interested in especially after the demise of the variety show.  However, MTV is primarily a "reality" network now.  Also, if you are not a lover of rap music, don't go to MTV.  I could write a book about the demise of melodic music but a guy named Bob Lefsetz had done a great job of doing that.  He has pretty colorful language but sure knows his music and the downfall of the music industry.   I'm not sure if he has written a book but he has a great newsletter that he sends out.   I am just a music fan/industry observer.    My music library is very diverse and  I have an open mind enough to see value in many genre's of music even though they may not be my favorite.

Rich, I find most awards shows boring so they are normally my last resort on a boring night.  However, this performance had been hyped so much that I watched.  As far as Britney goes, I wish her the best.  I think she will need a lot of well wishes.

I'll confess to flipping through the channels to see Ms. Spears emerge from her . . . her . . . ?  what would you say . . . her train wreck of a life pretty well sums it up.  As far as I could tell, the wreck is still ongoing.  Clay - you nailed it.  She was, in a word, horrible.  I haven't seen the show in years, but if last night was any indication, I haven't missed much.  Now that my kids have all moved out, I don't get exposed to MTV, Fuse, etc. like I used to, so I'm probably behind the times here.

I wish her well, but Lord she was a mess last night.  I'm afraid we haven't heard the last of her train wreck.  The entertainment triumverate of Britney, Paris, and Nicole continue to be examples of how I would NOT want my daughters/grand-daughters to turn out.  They are living examples of excess.  Watch and learn kids. As they use to warn on MTV, "Don't try this at home. These are 'professionals'".
