Categories update

Ok, good news.

I've been told that we can definitely add categories to the blog creation page. I'm not entirely sure how quickly the categories might be in place, but in the mean time, I want to make sure that the categories I recommend to the developers are representative of what you guys want.

This is what I have, after sorting though our earlier blog

National news

Local news

Education

Entertainment

Food and Drink

News you can use

Music

Literature

Religion

Breaking news

A quick explanation behind a couple of these. I chose local and national "news" instead of politics because of it's broader definition. "Breaking News" will probably be used mostly by the MCS staff, but can be used by anyone blogging on a traffic update or something else meeting both the "Breaking" and "News" criteria.

I'm also trying to keep these categories to 10 or fewer, because too much sub-categorization could quickly become just as confusing as not having any categorization at all.

As always, let me know what you think-

Jonathon,

The categories sound good.  I would add one more.  Miscellaneous or something along those lines.

Local sports?

To make My Clay Sun high school game reports more accessible, and not lost among everything else?

Just a thought.

Jonathan,

Can you take this blog back and attach it to the previous blog about tweaking.  We are starting all over again.  Sports has already been mentioned and so has miscellaneous.

Your comment would have shown up on "Recent comments" and we would have all followed you there.

Just a thought.  Appreciate your extra efforts.

Jonathan,

I agree with your statement that too many categories may be user-unfriendly.

Let's try this out and see if it's too much organization. I appreciate your diligence in making this happen.

The whole category thing isn't something I have any strong feelings about one way or the other, so those it matters to more can decide.

It does seem to me though that some of the categories aren't going to get alot of blog traffic, but I could be wrong.  I am just going by what has happened in the short history of MCS.

Recent events makes me want to ask do we need a category for "Social Issues"  The blog about Ed Gamble and the cartoon, some thought it to be  "Political" when it was actually a social issue.

Whatever gets put in place I will have nooooo problems with.

Jonathan

I would like to make a suggestion about the categories on the MCS website. I think a good idea would be to emulate the print newspaper and comprise them into those sections. This would cut down on the categories but make it user friendly. If Carl can do we can do it.

Just a thought to make it simple.

Thanks for your efforts.

Jonathan while tweaking the system by adding categories that the blogers have suggested, you could always remove the ones that are not being used at a latter date. So if at first you go over your ten that you would like to maintain after a short trial period I am sure several could be weeded out; Just a thought.

It takes a unsatisfied person to make things satisfactory Winn1955

Suggestions?  Most of these are based on what you are actually talking about on MCS.  Trim and edit as you will.  Maybe Local News could be removed because usually when you are talking about local news your subject fits under the other tags-Crime, Education,  Clay County Gov.

Maybe you want an Elections tag so you can talk about political candidates or a Candidates tag.

1.    Breaking news/announcements

2.    Clay County Government

3.    Crime

4.    Education

5.    Entertainment-(Movies, Television, Music, Literature, Sports, Computer, Food, Drink)

6.    Finance

7.    Health

8.    Home, garden

9.    Humor/Just for fun/misc.

10.  Local News

11.  National News

12.  Pets

13.  Religion

14.  Travel

I need some help from the Bloggers, the younger generation or from the officials of this site.

OMG, is a blog supposed to be a conversation between bloggers with someone beginning the dialogue or is it a person's daily diary laid out for all to read?

Do you know what I mean?

I think it's both actually.  But normally, I believe personal diary type things are when people have their own personal websites.
