As some of you may have read, there was a school board meeting for Realtors this week. It was an informational meeting for agents to pass on the right information to our customers. I did not count the number of agents in attendance but it could have been around 50. It was a question and answer session, that proved to be very helpful. I will touch on a few points that I found very good and helpful.1. I asked David Owens and Mike Elliot directly about the concurrency issues we all talked about in the early spring. It appears that they have to revisit this in May of 08, but that most of the redistricting in the "near foreseeable future" will have to do with new schools. This is good news for Fleming Island, so it does not appear that Fleming Island will be redistricted. Although, they may try to put a new elementary school on the island to relieve some over crowding. One positive thing about the slow down in the real estate market is that enrollment in Florida is WAY down this year, so this may help some of the projected enrollment issues they thought they were going to have. Clay and St.Johns County were one of the VERY few counties in the state have a positive growth in students so that means we are still moving people in, but at a much slower pace than in previous years.2. There are several new schools coming on line, I would encourage you to look at the clay county school website if you are interested. Oakleaf, and Lake Asbury are the hot spots, ( TONS OF NEW SCHOOLS) so if you want new schools that is where you will have to go. The Junior High for Fleming is slated for 2013. This is because if they pull everyone out of Green Cove it will sit half empty until the growth reaches that area. The new High School at Oakleaf is slated for 2010 and this will relieve overcrowding at Orange Park, I also directly asked about the appearance of Orange Park, and that will be addressed when Oakleaf opens in 2010.3. There was a lot of talk about school grades, Clay County still has an A rating ( one of the few in the state). Some of the top schools dropped because of the lower 25% of test takers not making improvements. If you look at the scores we are still tops.4. The property cut- nobody really understands this, ( I don't even think the people who made it up do) but this could affect new schools and budgets. This is very vague and the budgets have not been set.5. With slowing home production and sales bring lower sales tax money, impact fees etc. This could also have an affect on the budget. This is a state wide issue and until the market picks up, we will not be able to predict how much money the state has to spend. 6. There was no talk of a 1/2 sales tax. Very interesting since this was such a big deal in the spring. This is the best I can do to inform you of what is going on. I hope it helps.
