Sid with the pretty blue eyesIt saddens my heart that this 3yr. old child with pretty blue eyes died in a house. Fire, and too boot most likely could have been avoided. I have been in three fires involving my personnel property, two house fires, and one auto fire. Due to the quick thinking of my son, who was trained in fire suppression in the Navy, and my training as a fire fighter we managed to suppress both house fires right before flash over, and before the fire department arrived. The auto was a total loss. There was a common denominator in the house fire that was missing in the auto fire. A very useful and inexpensive tool, the fire extinguisher. As a retired firefighter it had just become natural instinct to keep them in my home. I would keep one in the dinning area right next to the kitchen, and one in the hall way next to the bedrooms. Both times that is what saved my family, and house from total devastation. Who knows if it would have saved Sid’s life, I guess God does. The point being; at the very least you would have had a fighting chance to save him. I have often wondered why it is mandatory for a business to have them in there building and not a home. For under $20.00 you can buy one, shoot Buy two and practice with one. The other item is a smoke alarm, and not just to have one; the position that you mount one is very important. You should have at there very least two operating fire extinguishers and a minimum of two smoke detectors. If you have cathedral ceilings in your home, make sure one is mounted at the highest level on the ceiling. Smoke fills the house at the highest point first. Too Sids parents and grandparents; may the wounds of pain, hurt, and despair be healed with God’s speed. My heart weeps for your anguish.
