Taxes and Smart GrowthI think it is incredible that they want to hold off on reviewing the impact fees until AFTER we vote on a sales tax. If the sales tax passes than they will likely lower the impact fees for development. That is CRAZY!! Guess why they want to lower the impact fees? All the big developers contribute to political campaigns ( including MR Conkey he was backed by a lot of big developers).. The developers don't donate money to campaigns unless they expect something in return. So watch what happens. If the sales tax passes they will shift the burden to us (even though we already pay the impact fee when we buy our new homes they add it into the cost of the home), and we pay real estate taxes, and now they want to increase the SALES tax.. Garbage!!! They need to drive more commercial growth in Clay County to support the growing population. A lot of shopping is done outside of CLAY county resulting in lost tax revenue. We need smart leaders with a good growth MANAGEMENT plan.. Last week I read that a Jim Wilson or Jim Smith said the school board had no place in their growth management meeting. The school board is suffering with tremendous growing pains because there has NOT been smart growth management. They rubber stamp every developers plan. The builders and developers have had RECORD profits for the last few years and none of them help to build the schools. This has got to stop! WE have to get smart and manage the growth or it will manage us! I agree. What we really need at the moment is a complete moratorium on all building. I remember when they passed the joke of an impact fee legislation a few years ago. Even then, it was stated that it would not be enough to pay for the needed growth for schools and roads. But these twisted morons were too terrified of the Builders Mafia.
Now the school board will once again attempt to increase taxes to pay for the very thing the impact fee was going to cover. (nudge, nudge, wink, wink) Why is it in Clay County (and I doubt we are alone) that our elected officials are the very people we need to be protected from? Frankly, I will not vote for anyone who states he wants the job. You know altruism has nothing to do with it. As always, follow the money.
