Scooter Rides Free?

I thought I would throw around the recent Presidential commutation of Scooter Libby's sentence as a blog topic. How do you guys feel about this one?

I have my own ideas, as usual. Of course it was politically motivated. The issue is that he was convicted and sentenced in a court of law. He received a sentence within reason considering he was found guilty. Harsh sentencing has been a cornerstone of the Bush administrations. The only difference is that he worked for the Executive branch of the government. So, Scooter rides free. The fine for a person of Scooter's importance is spare change. He is the fair haired boy of a lot of influential and wealthy people. He can accept a dinner invitation and pick up that kind of cash.

Of course, there is also the possibility that President Bush will pardon him. In fact, feel certain that he will. Presidential pardons and or commuted sentences are usually given on the last day of a President's term. President Clinton granted pardons in mass his last day in office. I doubt President Bush will wait that long. If you examine the Presidential pardons/commutations below, all were granted by the next administration.

Listed below are some notable pardons/commutations:

Daniel "Dan" Rostenkowski    pardoned by Clinton     served 15 of 17 month sentence

Marc Rich                             pardoned by Clinton     required to pay $100M before pardon

Richard Nixon                       pardoned by Ford         resigned - Watergate

Jimmy Hoffa                         commuted by Nixon     no one knows what happened to him

G. Gordon Libby                    commuted by Carter     Watergate break-in

Caspar Weinberger                pardon by Bush Sr.       Iran contra affair

Scooter Libby c                     commuted by "W" Bush   obstruction of justice, Plame affair

I was somewhat surprised at this fact that no President had pardoned or commuted a sentence for anyone working in their administration, with the exception of President Bush. If you can find an instance of this occurring, please correct me.

Islander,

You've got to be kidding man.  Everybody out there has an opinion on this one.  I've been going through the news both here and abroad & have found some common threads.

Scooter did indeed do the dirty deeds of which he was convicted.

Scooter is a sacrificial lamb for at least three people high in the administration.  I'll give you four guesses, but you'll need only one.

Almost universally accepted is that because of uncovered, substantiated connections, Bush, Cheney & Rove are up to their eyeballs in this cowpatty and are doing their utmost in CYA (Cover Your Arse) policy because they are so very complicit in so very much.  WOW!  There's a shock. The way the news about those three is going, I would be very surprised if they DIDN'T have anything to do with the Anna Nicole Smith debaucle.

A while back, I wrote that from what I have read, Bush had better start treating Nancy Pelosi a bit nicer because she has been the driving force in The House keeping moves for impeachment on the back burner.  And she is just about the only one.  A growing number of cities and states have been drawing petitions, etc. for the final curtain.  In effect, she has been Bush's best friend.  The problem is, Bush & his gang have done so much that is so bad which has been documented, even I am ready get out the rope.  Yeah, it would be a pain in the butt.  Yeah, this country might get a bit more divided.  But I think it's time that we show not only our own people, but the rest of the world, that not all of us are like Bush & Co. and that we have the guts to admit it and rectify the problem.

Yes, I know that there are those out there who have the same mindset that Bush & Co. have, not caring what anybody else thinks.  But I don't have the time to tell them just how wrong they are.  Besides that has been done in print & done much better than I could do.  Just another tip from uncle Rich.

Have you taken a look at what past presidents have done?  You can find it at www.usdoj.gov and enter pardons in left search menu.

Of course, where do you think I got all that information and if you read my blog, you see I only put in the notable ones. The list was too long and boring, and I presumed anyone interested would have researched it on their own. People have short memories. Absolute power corrupts absolutely.

He is not alone, but no one can do anything about the past. This is the present, and past wrong deeds committed do not give permission to commit a wrong deed today. The President has the right to pardon or commute the sentence of anyone. Just because he has the right, doesn't mean he should. Americans gave the President that right, but he should use it prudently, and not to cover his own administration.  Can you provide an instance where a sitting President commuted or pardoned a member of their administration while they were in office?   I haven't found one yet, but I stand to be corrected.

As I've written previously, I was so angered when Bush got the nomination in 2000 that I revoked my membership in the republican crime family party. Since the conservative party doesn't appear to want to go back on its own, I shall remain an Independent. That being said, as long as Bush was preoccupied with killing Islamic savages (and make no mistake, they aren't terrorizing either Britain or us) I could live with his other missteps. I was heartened that we as a nation kicked his ridiculous immigration amnesty thing into oblivion. But this pardon of Libby just outrages me no end. Not even Nixon had that much gall. I don't think it's an impeachable offense but it does point out the arrogance of power.

Whether a lowly County Commissioner or president of the USA, it seems power always goes to their heads. I believe (and this is just me speaking) we have not had a decent president since Teddy Roosevelt. Since he left office the men who sit in that office have been little more than pretenders to the throne. And Bush's actions regarding this prison commutation are horrendous. This bolsters my assessment that we really need a constitutional ammendement limiting these cretins to a single six year term. You just know things are not going to improve with succeeding presidents.

ADGITAH! (yeah, I like it)

Like all of us, I have been pondering this situation also.  But I wonder what can be done.  I find it hard to believe an impeachment will be pursued.  As right as impeachment may be, it fails the cost-benefit test.  Too much distraction, anxiety, etc. to impeach a lame duck president with 18 months to go.  And don't forget that pesky little war going on still.

My question is more philosophical: does every politician/public servant that gets elected end up being corrupt?  Or, is it that like other news, only the bad ones get the publicity.  Why do the majority of voters get suckered in by the likes of Rostenkowski, Bush, Clinton, Duke Cunningham, etc. and keep re-electing them?  Are those who vote for them that easily charmed?

I hate that the people we should be able to trust the most are actually often the least trustworthy of all (arghh! I'm starting to sound like lily).  I saw Bill Clinton campaigning for his wife and thought now there's a guy with a set.  As far as I'm concerned he's a bold face liar ("It depends on what your definition of is is.") Yet he has no problem running around the country talking about what a great Prez his wife would be.  Personally, I'd be too ashamed to show my face.  I want to believe that most of the people who run for office are interested in their constituents best interest.  Naive?  I guess.

But the arrogance of the people who get up there and lie through their smiling teeth and hold average Joe in contempt amazes me.  Would you or I become the same way if we were elected to a position of power?  I'm sure there is a doctoral dissertation in all of this (and probably has been written already).

The only saving grace is that we have a chance every 2 or 4 or 6 years to send a message, to try to fix a wrong.  I still believe term limits for federal legislators would help cure this problem. No one should be a politician for decade after decade.  Unconstitutional someone said.  That's why they have the amendment process.  It's been done for presidential term limits, it could be done for legislators too.  One of you bloggers (Rich I think) wrote about apathetic and uneducated voters.  Ultimately, that is the root of the problem.  But, I consider myself a fairly literate and informed kind of guy, and I voted for Bush.  Twice.  Adgitah.

Maybe the TU should give me my own column and call it Lily Knows Best. :>)

Baxley & Lily's Lore,

Lily's Lore, if you get a column, ANYWHERE, you'll have at least one faithful reader here.  I like the idea.  In reality, we all have been writhing columns, here in the blogs.  Good ideas, bad ideas, they've all shown up here.  I remember my first entry.  I said it was a great idea by My Clay Sun, to give the readers in the community an open venue for information & discussion.  I still think that way.

Baxley, don't feel too bad.  I even voted for Bush the first time.  Sorry to say, the future doesn't look all that bright as far as candidates are concerned.  Definitely doesn't cause me to wax lyrical about the political future of our country.

On the other hand..........I came across an interesting web site this AM.  impeachpac.org/resolutions-list.  I gave it the once over & I'll go over it more closely later.  Give it a shot.  Just another tip from uncle Rich.
