What's that bird?Starting today and through the 19th lots of bird lovers, birdwatchers and birders will be identifying and counting birds in their backyards. I will be out there with coffee in one hand and a pair of binoculars in the other. There are other bird counts that take place throughout the year but what could be easier than having your morning coffee outside and seeing what Mother Nature sends your way. Check the website to see what others have seen in your area and other neighborhoods. Warbler
6:20 am With the sun still low in the east creating a soft warm glow, I stood outside in 29 degree weather with coffee cup in hand and heard the first bird of the day calling, a redbird, or Northern Cardinal. Today is the Great Backyard Bird Count and I was eager to get started. The day did not disappoint. Before the morning was over I had recorded 49 different species of birds including 2 adult bald eagles, 250 tree swallows and very nearly as many yellow-rumped warblers. A raspberry colored house finch made an appearance at my feeder and a nearby pond had a wintering red head duck amongst the hundred or so ring-necked ducks. Not a bad way to spend the morning.
