Jacksonville and Orange Park, Florida will host a group of International students arriving on July 2, 2008 and departing July 29, 2008.  The students are coming to our area to improve their English language skills and to experience American family life. EF Educational Homestay Program is looking for short-term host families to welcome these students into their homes. Host families are being asked to provide a bed for the student to sleep in, transportation to and from a designated bus stop in your area,  meals and a warm, loving environment for the student to spend their evenings and weekends.   During the week, students will attend English classes each morning and field trips each afternoon. The program is supported by round the clock staff and students are fully insured.  Many of these students have dreamed their entire life of coming to the United States.  They have studied English in school and are eager to spend their summer learning first hand about our family life, culture and community. High School age students of Host Families may earn 60 community service hours toward graduation & scholarship requirements based on your schools acceptance.

Emmy Award-winning actress, talk show host, designer and author Linda Dano will be in Jacksonville on Wednesday, February 20, 2008 to host a free seminar on depression (major depressive disorder) and discuss her personal struggle with the illness.  During the event, Ms. Dano will be joined by a doctor to teach people with depression and their loved ones about the illness. Participants will learn how to recognize the symptoms of depression, understand what can trigger the illness and map out a wellness plan. Additionally, participants will learn about Support Partners – an exciting program that offers step-by-step instruction on how to build partnerships between people living with depression and those who want to help them to encourage recovery.

Barbara Spurlin visited Chimney Lakes Elementary and shared the book she wrote called, Wish I had a Pony. She discussed with students the elements of a great story. She also shared pictures of the real pony which was the object of her story, along with her own children. Barbara is a former principal in Duval County.

The Safe Animal Shelter is in need of items to sell at its yard sale fundraiser on Saturday, Feb. 23. Donated items are tax deductible; a receipt will be given at drop-off.

Requested items include gently used infant and children’s clothing, household items, toys, sports equipment, kitchen items, books, knick-knacks and collectibles, as well as movies and music CDs. Large household appliances cannot be accepted.

The yard sale will be held at the Doctors Inlet Civic Center on Peoria Road from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.Item donations may be dropped off at the Shelter on any day of the week except Thursday or Sunday between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. until Feb. 21. The Shelter is located at 2913 County Road 220, just west of Knight Boxx Road, Middleburg.

Support the Fleming Island High School NJROTC this Saturday, February 23rd from 8-12N at Ruby Tuesday's on CR220!  Come have your car washed by hard working cadets who are raising money for their trip to the Navy National Drill Competition in Pensacola!

Jacksonville and Orange Park, Florida will host a group of International students arriving on July 2, 2008 and departing July 29, 2008.  The students are coming to our area to improve their English language skills and to experience American family life. EF Educational Homestay Program is looking for short-term host families to welcome these students into their homes. Host families are being asked to provide a bed for the student to sleep in, transportation to and from a designated bus stop in your area,  meals and a warm, loving environment for the student to spend their evenings and weekends.   During the week, students will attend English classes each morning and field trips each afternoon. The program is supported by round the clock staff and students are fully insured.  Many of these students have dreamed their entire life of coming to the United States.  They have studied English in school and are eager to spend their summer learning first hand about our family life, culture and community. High School age students of Host Families may earn 60 community service hours toward graduation & scholarship requirements based on your schools acceptance.

March 1, 2008, will be the date of the 2nd Annual First Coast Air Potato Roundup.  The Clay County site will be held at the Crosby Sanctuary, which is owned by the Duval Audubon Society (serving Clay, Duval and Nassau Counties).  The Crosby Sanctuary is an approximately 400-acre nature preserve located west of the North Meadowbrook Terrace subdivision in Orange Park.  The address is 427 Aquarius Concourse, Orange Park, FL 32073.  The roundup will last from 9:00 AM until noon.  Contact site captain Pete Johnson (904-536-4806) for more information, or go to www.crosbysanctuary.blogspot.com for details and directions.  No registration necessary unless you are bringing a large group.  A prize will be given for the largest potato collected!  All ages are welcome to participate.  Come join the fun and help preserve our conservation lands!
